The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya takes visitors on an uninterrupted journey through a thousand years of Catalan art from the 10th to the 20th centuries. Permanent collection of the National Art Museum of Catalonia:

Make your way to the National Art Museum in the beautiful National Palace on Montjuic Hill. Redeem your voucher at the ticket office and head inside to enjoy the art independently.

Opened in 1934, the museum houses a vast collection of Catalan, Spanish and European art that spans a period of roughly 1,000 years. The gallery includes works by Titian, Gainsborough and modernist masters such as Gaudí, too. Perhaps start with the museum's most famous treasures: its Romanesque frescoes. View the vivid artworks, many of which are displayed in recreated church interiors. Don't miss the eye-catching 12th-century Christ in Majesty that depicts a luminous Christ sitting on a rainbow. Explore the stunning Renaissance and baroque collections of paintings and sculptures from Europe between the 1400s and 1900s, with masterpieces by Canaletto, Titian and Goya. Another highlight is the Modern Art section, home to paintings, sculptures, posters and other art nouveau works by 19th- and 20th-century Catalan artists. The showpiece is a collection of Gaudí furniture that includes sinuous wood chairs and doors.

How long you stay in the museum is up to you, but many people find that three hours is sufficient.

Tips & Information: - During high-season (and in general) buy your tickets in advance online - Plan around 3 hours to visit the whole museums (It is one of the largest museums in Spain) - Has a significant collection of romanesque church paintings The museum's collection is mainly made by the acquisition of local pieces and later complemented by donations and acquisitions from private galleries. Within this museum there is: - Lots of romanesque murals and Gothic retables received from Antonio Gallardo Ballart - A Gothic collection with pieces from the "Crown of Aragon" - A Collection of modern art dedicated to art produced during the period of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) - Masterpieces from the masters of the Spanish Golden Age (José de Ribera, Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Zurbarán, ...) - Paintings and sculptures spanning European art from the Gothic to the rococo period (Fra Angelico, Pietro da Rimini, Taddeo Gaddi, Petrus Paulus Rubens, ...) - A modern art collection with pieces from Marià Fortuny, Claudi Lorenzale, Lluís Rigalt Some keys pieces are: - The "Apse of Sant Climent de Taüll" by "Master of Tahull" - The Arlanza gryphon, from the "Benedictine monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza" - The romanesque altar "Altar frontal from La Seu d'Urgell or of The Apostles" - The "Batlló Majesty", a large 12th-century Romanesque wooden crucifix - The "Head of Christ", a scluptur from Jaume Cascalls - the "The Consecration of Saint Augustine" painting by Jaume Huguet - The "Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew" by José de Ribera, known as Lo Spagnoletto. - The "The Martyrdom of Saint Cucuphas" by Ayne Bru - "Saint Peter and Saint Paul" painting from Dominikos Theotokopoulos known as "El Greco". - "Ramon Casas and Pere Romeu on a Tandem" by Ramon Casas i Carbó

The museum is beautiful! Nice staff. Lots to see! I would’ve given it a five, but was sorely disappointed when they closed at 2:43 pm on December 26! We were given no forewarning. As they rushed us out, we were not even allowed to visit the gift shop. My family and I had pre purchased “skip the line” tickets. TripAdvisor and the museum itself didn’t warn us of the early closing. We would have paced ourselves differently. We would’ve come in the morning, but the ticket was open ended. So, we got less than two hours to visit. What we saw was beautiful. Unfortunately, we did not have time to scratch the surface. The grounds outside were beautiful and enjoyable. My daughter is an art historian, so the short visit left us disappointed.

The views of the city and this grand palace was an awesome site to see. Sitting enjoying a glass of sangria and seeing the city was worth visiting.

It is probably not worth coming here just for the art (although there is at least one Picasso and a Sisley) as there are better museums elsewhere, but the museum houses a vast and impressive oval hall with unsupported roof and a huge organ, a great selection of church decorations from Catalan village churches and a stunning terrace with views down over Barcelona. The museum is easily reached from Plaça España and a series of escalators will take you right up to the museum building (and down again afterwards).
