Sami did a wonderful job of guiding what was almost a personal tour of the Houmas Plantation (4 of us). Having read recently some of the history of the house, I knew that she knew what she was talking about. Nice young lady who did a professional job while being appropriately friendly and open with her clients. Her interest in history played well here.

Cheryl was our tour guide and she was very knowledgeable and kind. There were 4 of us on our tour and she took her time and allowed us to take pictures throughout the tour. Cheryl was happy to answer all of our questions about the beautiful Home and Gardens. We visited Oak Alley Plantation before Houmas House. Our visit to Houmas House was our favorite experience while visiting NOLA. If you are visiting the plantations, you won't want to miss Houmas. There's also a beautiful gift shop, restaurant and museum on the property.

The estate and grounds are are beautiful. There is no arguing that. However, I was disappointed and outraged that there was no mention of the contributions that black slaves made to the running of the estate. It is unlikely that Houma would be standing today without the contribution of Black people. In addition, there was barely any mention of how the property was acquired From indigenous peoples, except for a brief mention that it was purchased from them. I think it is the responsibility of establishments such as Houmas to tell and reveal the full history in all of its details no matter how painful it is. We owe this to Black Americans, and we owe this to the indigenous peoples of the United States. The museum was closed on the day that I went because of a wedding. It is quite possible that they make mention of these people and their contributions in the museum, but it was not mentioned on the tour.

This was by far the best tour we took on this trip. (Just for reference, we also toured Destrehan which was great and Oak Alley which was OK. Nottoway was basically not available and San Francisco was closed.) I cannot recommend Houmas House enough! The house itself was AMAZING and the tour was fabulous! The guide (who was very fun) clearly loved his job and was FULL of stories and details. My only minor complaint was I wish the tour were longer so we could hear more. However, most folks are going to be very pleased. We arrived around 4ish and didn't know what to expect....we were just hoping to see the house. We found out there were cottages and a restaurant on the premise. It turns out they did have a cottage available and signed us up for one night.....we were basically a "walk in" and they took great care of us. We decided to eat in the onsite restaurant and, again, the food was amazing. REALLY good and a good value too. When you go into the restaurant, you think you are going to have to dig really deep in your pockets because it is SO beautiful - but the value was good and the food was out of this world. Our waitress stopped eating her own meal to wait on us. We took her suggestions and are so glad we did! Did I mention the grounds? Wow! After signing in, we had the absolute friendliest lady, Sue, give us a ride on a golf cart also giving us a tour of the grounds. Clearly, the owner loves this place and it is infused with his spirit. Our stay was so wonderful, we came back for a second night! If you are in Louisianna, outside of New Orleans, do yourself a favor and spend some time at Houmas House. Maybe, if you're lucky, you will get to meet the owner, David. This delightful man will make your stay over the top special and memorable.

Suzanne was our guide. She did a excellent job giving the history of the plantation and how the folks lived in that Era. Was a very large group but she did a terrific job in handling it and making sure everyone could see and hear. The gardens were lovely and well maintained. Enjoyed the museum. It held a wealth of information. Ate lunch at the Cafe. Had the chicken salad on sour dough bread with French fries. Was delicious!
