Overview

The Whitney Museum is New York's home for modern and contemporary art of the United States. Located in Manhattan's vibrant Meatpacking District, the Museum presents the work of living artists alongside favorites by Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jacob Lawrence, Alexander Calder, and many others.

Visit: Whitney Museum of American Art, 99 Gansevoort Street, New York City, NY 10014-1404

As the preeminent institution devoted to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of 20th century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. The Whitney is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting American art, and its collection—the finest holding of twentieth-century American art in the world—is it’s key resource. The Museum's signature exhibition, the Biennial, is the country's leading survey of the most recent developments in American art.

Designed by architect Renzo Piano and situated between the High Line and the Hudson River, the Whitney's new building vastly increases the Museum’s exhibition and programming space, providing the most expansive view ever of its unsurpassed collection of modern and contemporary American art. Enjoy iconic works by Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollack, and Georgia O'Keeffe in natural light filled galleries and sweeping views of Manhattan on the Museum’s outdoor observation decks.

The Whitney welcomes you to the Meatpacking District, a 20 square-block neighborhood with a bustling community of artists, galleries, restaurants, and nightlife. The Museum is steps from the High Line, Chelsea Market, and a short walk from Greenwich Village, where the Museum was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930.

Not a lot on view. Smaller than I thought. Liked the neighborhood. Should have reduced admission w two floors closed. A bit disappointed

A nice visit on Valentines Day. The staff were kind and suggested a membership as I would be back; I took advantage of the membership price for someone from out of town. I was happy that they had an Indigenous and Black exhibit. It was really moving and felt like home. It was nice to see the works respected. I look forward to see what they share in the future. The views from the top and the stairwell are a great plus to visiting; sunset can be a really nice time to be there. I wish the shop had more options, especially with the size of prints. I enjoyed the restaurant and will definitely go back.

We loved this Museum. We'd gone hoping to see their Basquiat but not on display. Regardless it was a brilliant 'gallery' experience. Incredible exhibits that both I and my 11 year old loved. Friendly staff, especially the 'amazing lift' operator with a love for the educational floor and from the roof great views over the city. In a brilliant area alongside the Hudson River, nearby park and adjacent to the High Line park to walk back. Brilliant ...couldn't recommend enough. And children are free.

Located in the Meatpacking District, I'm told this property has the largest column-free museum gallery in NYC. We went specifically to see "Henry Taylor: B Side", a solo exhibit showing from October through January 2024. The opening Henry Taylor paintings show a celebration of black life in addition to acknowledging hardships. "See Alice Jump" shows Alice Coachman (a high jumper in the 1940s) leaping over an invisible barrier in a dull-colored neighborhood. She became the first black woman ever to win Gold at the Olympics. The image seems to burst out of the canvas. There is a section dedicated to black legends (Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King) as well. Heroes are depicted in Henry's work in addition to everyday people. People are always the main attention. Go on line to the museum's website to get tickets.
