Overview

A unique experience by mountain Railway through the Alps, beyond canyons, viaducts and tunnels discovering new treasures unknown by most of the visitors of the French Riviera.

We will stop in the most picturesque villages, very surprising hidden treasures, being astonished as well by the landscapes, as by medieval villages & baroque treasures of the Baroque Route, also called Salt Road for the Trading Route back in centuries.

The Valley of Roya is surrounded by Alps Mountains and is the main door of the very preserved National Park du Mercantour, well known for his several lakes, and his mysterious engraving stones on the Valley des Merveilles.

Attention: A good physical condition is required for this tour (includes between 7km to 15km walk/hiking)

    If you have been to Nice and experienced the city and the promenade, why not bring one day to the Alps? We booked a tour by Tripadvisor and met Will outside the train station in Nice. Will guided us through the valleys and tunnels and had good knowledge about the small towns we went through. We stopped in La Brigue and went through the village with narrow paths and in to the church. A lot to see. Lunch at a local restaurant, no hurry. The last part was the town Saorge, which was spectacular. We had an interesting day and got to see more than we could have planned ourselves. The tour is highly recommended.

    We enjoyed our three days in Nice, but the family agreed that this was a highlight of the trip. Cyril, the tour guide, was exceptional. He is getting his PhD in history and certainly knows his stuff, but importantly, he really cares about people, connecting with them and making sure they’re happy. Great sense of humor, provided fantastic context to the history of the area, etc. I can’t speak highly enough about him. We didn’t have to do really any hiking on our trip, although I know it is mentioned in the details on the website. We were able to catch a van up to the chapel in La Brigue, which was nice. In Saorge, you do hike up through the compact village to get to the monastery. We had two elderly folks with us, 75 to 80 years old, and they were fine with the amount of walking we did, although if the itinerary was different or the van wasn’t available, they wouldn’t have been able to complete it in time. Lunch, chatting with the other tourists, was very pleasant. Sadly, I’ve heard that this valley will be cut off from the train for 16 months starting in late summer 2024. If you have a chance to experience this tour before, then, I highly recommend it! All of the folks in each of the villages were very happy to see us, very friendly.

    Superb day out. My Birthday treat to myself. Helped a little by the lovely weather, Samuel, Cyril and oh my goodness I’m so sorry I forgot the young man’s name who was learning the tour were outstanding guides. Anyway, all 3 were a delight. 100% engaged in looking after us and doing their best at all times. I loved the whole day. Lunch was outstanding, we were taken to many beautiful locations and learned lots about the history of Nice. I can’t recommend highly enough.

    My husband and I took the Baroque Royal Route Train experience through the Alps with Cyril as our guide. From the moment he introduced himself, Cyril came across as friendly and interesting — this never wavered as he filled the entire day with facts, stories, anecdotes about the area and its population which made the lives of the people in these very small (some no larger than 400 people) come alive for us. Cyril was generous and thoughtful to us (a very senior couple), answered questions about the area with authority—-he has been studying this area and its inhabitants for a number of years and shared with us many personal stories of the people we encountered along this route.
