Overview

Our guides are locals and have a vast wealth of experience skiing in the Canadian Rockies. They are certified by the ACMG & IFMGA to the highest possible standards in the industry.

This program is aimed at helping strong resort skiers to take their first steps into backcountry skiing.

Have you ever wanted to take that next step to skiing / riding in the backcountry and felt some apprehension? Your fear of the unknown mountain environment is a very healthy fear, but with some instruction and guidance from a professional, the unknown will start to make sense.

During this program, we will go to a backcountry area close to Banff and you will learn the basic skills necessary to be successful while backcountry skiing / riding. This is the perfect course to take in addition to an AST 1 (Avalanche Skills Training) course, which teaches how to identify and manage avalanche hazard in the backcountry.

The skills covered include:
- Using your backcountry skiing / riding gear
- Route finding
- Applied decision making in avalanche terrain

Calling this a trip for beginners is a misnomer. My group included 3 experienced back-country skiers and one intermediate. I felt the terrain was beyond that for someone who has never trekked and was not familiar with ski trekking equipment. To me, it seems a more appropriate beginner experience would include more information about the equipment needed, I had to rent which turned out to be a nightmare, and terrain similar to what you would find at the top of the Wawa Lift at Sunshine village. Jeff was great, but had to accommodate two different experience levels and I was the odd man out.
