Stop At: Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen, Strasse der Nationen 22, 16515 Oranienburg, Brandenburg Germany

During the 1936 Olympics, hosted by Nazi Germany, slave laborers were forced to build a new concentration camp just north of Berlin, intended to hold the Nazis’ political enemies. This camp was Sachsenhausen, and during the next decade some 200,000 people were imprisoned within the camp before it was evacuated by the Soviets in 1945. For another five years, the Soviets used the camp to imprison 60,000 war criminals, including Nazis and Nazi collaborators.

On this tour, you'll explore the Sachsenhausen memorial site with a private guide. See the cells, execution grounds, crematorium, pathology laboratory, hospital and other sites, and learn about the camp's history, those imprisoned here and why Nazi architects considered Sachsenhausen to have the ideal structure for a concentration camp.

We just completed the Private Tour of Sachsenhausen. Our guide, Nickolai, met us at our hotel right on time and then we took the train to Oranienburg Station and walked from the train station to the Sachsenhausen (about 20 minutes). Nickolai gave us an introduction of the history of Sachsenhausen while on the train and continued as we walked. This tour provided information about the location, operation, leadership, etc. with a great deal of reverence and respect. We came away feeling that the entire day was designed for us (the biggest advantage of a private tour with the professional guide) and far from the generic tour our friends went on. Be forewarned though, we walked close to 11,000 steps on this tour, some of it on uneven pavement.

I can’t give just one specific thing that we enjoyed about our tour because the whole thing was an incredible experience. Our guide Ioana was absolutely fantastic. She was extremely knowledgeable, well spoken and very informative. I personally admired her intellect and most importantly, her punctuality. I would most definitely recommend her to anyone who is looking to travel to Berlin.

Our guide, Rebecca, met us at or hotel and led us very efficiently by train to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial. Rebecca is very pleasant, highly organized, and, originally from Canada, speaks English very well. Also, her knowledge of the Camp and its historical context is quite deep as she comfortably explained its operations and readily dealt with all our questions. Rebecca added considerably to our experience and helped us make the most of the day. I highly recommend both her and the tour.

Chloe’s enthusiasm for her city and history made this destination 100% valuable. She broke the information up. It was casual conversation and just listening to her allowed us to soak it all in. It can be an overwhelming place. Meeting us even a few minutes early to take us via the train was perfect timing. Having never been to the city, it was the best option for someone to take us. On the ride the tour started with stories and facts of the place we were about to visit. Her calmness and tone made hearing about it more peaceful as well. It can be a difficult place to see, she allowed us to go at our own pace. To reflect and take in her knowledge was less stressful than trying to read everything. We never felt we missed out on information.

Hannah was an amazing tour guide. She provided excellent background / context. She took us from our hotel to the site and back again via train and bus.
