  • What You Can Expect

Situated below Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head, Cape Town offers a rich cultural and industrial heritage. Including all the must-sees of any Cape Town day tour, this option is a geographical and cultural extravaganza, showing you Cape Town, from its historical beginnings to the dazzling modern shopping malls of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

The tour commences with a ferry trip across the bay to Robben Island (weather permitting). From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder to the newly democratic South Africa and of the price paid for freedom. The excursion includes a return ferry to the island, a bus tour on the island and of the prison.

In the city itself enjoy a drive through Bo-Kaap to discover how the Malay slaves influenced the culture, food and aesthetics of this beautiful city and its people. Continue to Table Mountain where you shall reach the top by cable car (weather permitting; cable car fee not included). Enjoy the panoramic views over the city with Robben Island lying sleepily in Table Bay. Also get a bird’s eye view over the Atlantic Seaboard.

Return to the city bowl area to the Company Gardens. Enjoy a walk through the garden and a visit to the SA Museum. This is followed by a visit to the Castle of Good Hope. Built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment station, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa.

The drive through the city center will also take you past the Houses of Parliament, the Grand Parade and City Hall from where Nelson Mandela first addressed South Africans after his release in February 1990.

Wow! If you go to Cape Town, Robben Island is a must see spot. It was one of the most compelling and interesting tours that I have ever been on. Afterwards, the tour around the city was interesting too and helped us get oriented so we could really enjoy our time in town. Our tour guide was a local and he was able to point out all the history and recommend other sites and restaurants too.

So glad that we booked this trip before leaving the UK. We were advised of the pick up time, and the driver was 5 minutes early. We had 4 other tourists on the mini bus, who were lovely company. Our first stop was table mountain. There was some delay prior to getting our tickets, which were not included in the price of the tour. We then got into the cable car, for the ride to the top. We were lucky that the morning was bright, and free of cloud, so the views at the top were breathtaking. This was a trip that was not to be missed, if you visit Cape Town. We were then taken to Company Gardens, for a history lesson on South Africa. After looking around this beautiful area, we ended up at The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. This tended to be our base for the three nights in Cape Town, due to the fantastic restaurants, and their out of this world steaks. We then caught the ferry across to Robben Island. The ticket had been pre booked, by the tour company, and we were so glad, otherwise we would not have made it. The trip was disappointing, but still a Must See when here. All in all, an excellent day out, where we saw all the main attractions, and learnt so much about this wonderful country
