Overview

Zeitz MOCAA was founded with the vision of being the first major museum in Africa, and a leading museum in the world, dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora.

From its inception, the aim was to become a place that draws people from around the world and to have the cultural, environmental and social relevance of a prestigious international art museum in an African context.

Moreover, the museum was founded around the desire to provide access to a core collection of art to the public; and to create an institution that advances the knowledge, appreciation and preservation of art, personal liberties, equality, freedom of speech, and democracy.

Visit: Zeitz MOCAA, South Arm Rd Silo District, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town Central 8001 South Africa

Awful. No art and what little there was was pretentious and amateurish. Accompanied by lengthy and florid descriptions that possibly aimed to hide the lack of insight and creativity. Embarrassing.

Really beautiful building with a lovely roof top exhibit and six floors of interesting art. Great value for the art on offer and has such a wide range of exhibits it would suit anyone’s interest.

I was disappointed by the "art" they displayed. One display was of fruit boxes and another was scaffolding with bags of onions hanging on them. Not quite sure what artistic representation this is supposed to be. The only actual art was on the very bottom floor where art work from different school children were displayed and this was very nice. I think the building itself was the best art piece of all and the architecture was exquisite. The gift store inside was really overpriced. More aimed at the tourist than for a local South African budget.

I hardly know where to start with this. Let's start with the positives, it is a nice building architecturally (tallest once in Africa I think), it is in V&A area, and you can get in for free if you have the City Pass. That is it. I am a well travelled adult, I usually like art of all types and have been to many a place where contemporary art is in the eye of the beholder, and appeals to some, but not others. MOCAA was so devoid of art, that I was starting to wonder if it was some sort of existentialism joke. The sculpture garden was completely empty, and most floors were closed or had no access. The remaining exhibits that I can remember were so bloody odd, that I simply cannot do them justice in this review, but that is probably fine because MOCAA does try and explain them in detail in a "stream consciousness" type way that would have all but the most intense people saying "you what?". Special shout out to the installation that you have to take your shoes off to go in, and pitch black. No reason given (although it becomes obvious once you are in, that there are cushions on the floor, so yes, fair enough) and then you are in, trippy patterns of humans transposed with trippy music to accompany. Look, maybe it is me. I am clearly not getting it. Don't let me put you off.....

The grade 9 artwork in the basement was the highlight. Not worth the time or money for the rest of the floors. Distracted, careless and inaccessible videos & photographs searching for a meaning. Went in with high hopes of experiencing amazing contemporary South African Art and came away deflated. Great art gallery/store half a block to the north is vastly superior in 1/100th the space, by the way! Restorative after the MOCAA visit…
