Overview

Glacier Country Helicopters is a local, family owned and operated company based in Franz Josef, on the West Coast of New Zealand. Husband and wife team Gus and Poppy started the company in January 2014 and you'll generally find one of them out flying most days.

On our Pilots Choice flight you'll see two of the three "big" glaciers. You'll fly over the Franz Josef Glacier then over either the Fox Glacier or Tasman Glacier and fly into the Southern Alps to enjoy the included 10 minute snow landing for photos. Total experience time approx. 35 minutes.

Please allow an extra 45minutes on top of your flight time to allow for checking in, transport to helicopter, loading, unloading and to return to our office.

  • Our helicopter seats are 40cm wide. If you would like extra space or are wider than this we highly recommend booking a comfort seat which guarantees an empty seat next to you.
  • This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund
  • This experience requires a minimum number of travelers. If it’s canceled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund
  • This tour/activity will have a maximum of 12 travelers

We booked this tour since it included a landing on the Glacier. Original time was 09:30, however there were some clouds not allowing the original flight time. The whole thing was handled highly professional and we got re.scheduled to the afternoon. Clouds opened up and off we went. Dion was our pilot and his comments and explanations were great. He helped us to take pictures and all of us truly enjoyed every moment. Fantastic scenery, great pilot, safe aircraft, all was perfect. We did Heli flights before, amongst them also the Grand Canyon, the Great Ocean Road, the Iguazu Waterfalls and some other places but this was by far the best we have done! Thanks to the whole team, you made our experience unforgettable!

The staff is awesome, friendly and accommodating. If there were 10 stars, the staff and ride would score it. The views were breath-taking. The experience is one-of-a-kind. Go ahead and splurge. You won't regret it. I was pondering rather to go or not. Boy, I'm I glad I did. It will be one of the highlights of my 2 month vacation.

Best part of Franz Josef was flying right up to the glaciers. Our pilot was great as was the staff. With beautiful morning weather they let us go early...we didn't want to miss the helicopter part of our trip.
