Overview

After 20 years of photographing and observing the behavioural patterns of the Southern Right Whales that visit Walker Bay annually, I consider myself a Whale behavioural specialist and
I offer a unique and interactive land based whale watching experience, that includes sharing knowledge and personal stories spanning over two decades.
During my time photographing these spectacular mammals, it became a dream of mine to publish a photographic coffee table book. I'm pleased to say the 2nd edition, Hermanus Whales, the Journey Continues, is available directly from me and selected outlets in Hermanus.
I look forward to meeting you & sharing my knowledge & passion about the SRW's & the town I live in.

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: The Whale House Museum, Market Square, Overstrand South Africa

Introduction to Southern Right Whales and Hermanus

The visit to the museum is to familiarise clients with the Southern Right whale, info on their size, length and weight. I tell them the connection/ synergy there is between whales and Hermanus.
I speak about the whaling days and what impact it had on them and how it almost led to their demise.

The tour then follows the beautiful cliff path in front of town at an elevation of about 15 metres above the ocean. This elevation lends itself to having a great vantage looking out over the bay.
What people don’t realise is the depth of the ocean immediately down from the cliffs is about 10 metres. This allows the whales to approach the rocks of the cliffs to pretty much touching distance.
Whales are often seen between 50 and 300 metres from the shore line.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Hermanus Cliff Path, Westcliff Rd, Overstrand 7200 South Africa

Enjoy a 2 hour walk along the cliff path with myself. I know all the secret whale sighting locations. I know each whale intimately. I will explain all the relevant information from the whales age, behaviors and best possible timing of a breach for the best photo oppertunity.

Dave makes the trip, the whales make it better. His knowledge of all things Cetaceans is amazing, his expertise with the bay had us looking at whales within the hour. Highly recommend.

We took a whale walk with Dave in September. He was so insightful and took us to all the best spots. I travelled with my partner and parents - so a mix of ages! - but Dave knew how to make it accessible and fun for all of us. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Hermanus. Thanks Dave for a fantastic morning.

An absolutely spectacular experience. Dave has years of knowledge of exactly where to go to get the best possible chance of seeing the most amazing whales. The weather had been poor in recent days so Dave knew exactly where this would have impacted our chances of seeing them and he took us to the best possible spots. We saw a huge amount of whales (they come in pairs, the "mummy whale" and the "baby whale"). Oh and we were lucky enough to spot the white whale too! So chuffed. Thanks for a great experience Dave. Definitely recommend. From Will and Ashleigh

If you take a tour in Hermanus… take this one! Our whale watching boat tour got cancelled so the hotel suggested the whale watching tour from shore with Dave de Beer..!!! Amazing knowledge, great info and fun facts! The hours flew by. What a great guy! Btw just before we left Hermanus the next day we went back to one of the whale spots and saw 8 whales! One momma whale with baby really close to shore(we could hear her ‘talk’). Definitely coming back..!!!

We were a group of 10 and it so happened that we could not take the boat due to choppy waters. Dave suggested we walk through the coast where we could see the whales. In our opinion, the walk was short and we could see the whales at quite a distance. While we do understand whales do not come close to the shore, but R1000 per person was a bit to steep for a 1 hour walk on a public pathway. Dave was brilliant in terms of his information about whales and his briefing inside the whale museum was truly informative. He did give his book to us which was fantastic.
