Very good experience overall and would suggest to a friend. Also, a big help throughout our experience was the driver Hasham - he facilitated care for my partner during some serious issues related to either food or ingesting the water during toothbrushing. Thanks again. My partner and I went for the standard option which despite the lack of images showing what the differences of the luxury are. I've included a sunset picture of the luxury camp and over a small dune there was our camp, pictured at night. I'm very pleased I google mapped it as it was clear to me the differences in accommodation wouldn't too great and the location would be almost the same. I'm also trying to put everything here into context so the reader can make an informed judgement. Hopefully, this helps others! --- Day 1 we drove up the atlas mountains with a few stops for pictures and visited Ait Ben Huddu with a tour guide. We saw how they make pictures as well as walked the streets of the village to the top. As others have said, they like to talk a lot about how many films were shot there. We and a few others skipped lunch as it was pricey when compared to other options. We expected this from other reviews so we brought packed lunch. The hotel dinner was alright but it's a few shared tagines and plates that you pick from - not really my thing nor normal in my culture but others and my partner didn't appear concerned. Food was nice. The hotel for standard got the downstairs economy rooms which were okay but unfortunately the room smelt faintly like sewage - probably some plumming issue in the bathroom. Sheets weren't so clean either. --- Day 2 after an okay buffet breakfast we drove and stopped for lunch. The restaurant had a set meal deal - starter, main, dessert for quite cheap and it was quite nice. After we walked through a berber area with a berber guide to the rug shop. He was funny and felt very authentic about his way of life and represented his people well. My partner and I bought rugs after the mint tea and rug demonstration and left very happy. They took card too! I regret not having space for another as I think the haggling would've been fun. Others later pointed out that no one haggled... but we both felt we'd pay a lot more for what we got at home so they still felt like the right price. If I bought two... I would've definitely as I cannot personally justify the price of two rugs normally! We then took pictures on a rooftop of the surrounding mountains and then went to the Todga gorge. This was an interesting one, quite a few reviews make it seem a longer walk but for me it was a quite a short walk... still a nice experience if you like gorges. We then set off to the desert, Merzouga. We got out, sorted our rucksacks to have what we needed and they got taken via jeep to the camps. (Any other luggage was secured in the tour bus) We then got separated into the groups of standard/luxury and loaded onto the camels. This was magical, the sights of the dunes, the colours of the sky vs sand and I kept making Dune references which my partner groaned at... anyway. If you get lucky like me you get a nice ride which makes it easy to see and take pictures. The morning ride back I had a different, more rough ride which made me think stirrups would be good for these camels. Both luxury and standard ride out across the desert to the other side which is an hour by camel. We then had dinner which again was shared tagine etc. We then sand boarded, most went twice until no one wanted more and we watched the sunset. This was when my partner started to feel off. She started to have gas build up and burps that tasted acidic. I late that night also had one burp similar but nothing after that for me. My partner would then go through a series of symptoms until the day after next. (Thanks to the Brazilian woman who had bicarbonate soda which ceased her stomach cramps) anyway... I'll leave the rest of the details regarding her issues out of this. All I will reiterate is that the driver and others were very accepting and kind towards her. The driver had likely seen this before and was quick to help us with cumin to keep the nausea/burps at bay and provided mint leaves from a stop off that handed us a big bunch to smell. --- Day 3, we woke up for breakfast at 5:15 and it was nice. I only had the orange juice and we got ready for the ride back. Nothing too notable about the drive back, we stopped for lunch that was a buffet - naturally I and my partner as well as a few others didn't participate due to cost and not liking the selection vs flat cost. We then arranged a new drop off location to a different riad and we got dropped off where closely he could. Again, apart from the food/water situation... it would've been a breeze for us. The only real turn offs for us were the first and last lunches. I'm not sure what caused the illness as I shared all food with my partner and she's a very clean individual, more so than me. It only became apparent after the sand surfing and neither of us brushed our teeth by then on that day... my stomach is a bit more robust it appears. I hope others take our experience into account and go with their own judgement. At the very least, as with most of morroco, limit contact with the water and bring some medication in case.
