Come join us to observe the playful habits of Maui's most consistent return visitor - the humpback whale. The waters off West Maui have long been the favored vacation spot of these massive marine mammals. The Alii Nui provides maximum space and comfort. There are plenty of areas to enjoy the "show" from our spacious, shaded cabin or deck areas. A Marine naturalist is always onboard with facts about these gentle giants. A hydrophone will allow you to listen to the amazing songs the humpback whales sing; Maui's best "Whale Karaoke." Our whale watch will run seven days a week from mid-December until the whales go home.

Since 1978, Alii Nui Sailing Charters has been proudly sailing the seas of Maui, whisking guests away on exhilarating snorkeling trips, romantic sunset cruises, and everything in between. We’re honored to play a part in introducing our visitors to the island as well as its waters; as stewards of our proud culture, we take that responsibility seriously.

What Can You Expect?

Itinerary

Every December through April, humpback whales return to the shallow and warm waters of Maui. We’ll take you on a dedicated whale-watching adventure, experiencing these amazing wild animals in their natural habitat. We hope to catch a glimpse of them swimming, singing, and occasionally leaping into the air for a few moments of breathtaking natural beauty.

A large spread of gourmet hot and cold appetizers will be served on board throughout the excursion. A selection of domestic & craft beers, seltzers, premium red & white wines and champagne, and top tier liquors are also included (valid ID required).

  • In order to access the vessel, you will need to walk down a pier and step across a gap onto the deck. Crew will be able to assist with the gap.
  • Restrooms are accessible via 2-4 steps down into the cabin and into the restrooms.
  • This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund
  • This experience requires a minimum number of travelers. If it’s canceled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund
  • This tour/activity will have a maximum of 55 travelers

The whole trip for whale watching was a fantastic experience!! Before leaving the dock, the captain explained what we needed to know and introduced his enthusiastic staff. From the moment we boarded we were warmly welcomed. The food that was set up was delicious and plentiful…then the open bar was an added benefit. As soon as your beverage was gone you were asked if you wanted another. The captain guided the boat to a mother and baby…what a joy to see how the mom cares for her young one. The captain was very informative about the whale’s journey while near Maui. We saw another mother and baby pair a short time later. Our trip was a joyful time and we were so happy to be on board Alii Nui for the afternoon! It is on our list to repeat when we return to Maui!

Captain Josh and his crew were fantastic! Johanna, Brandon, and Corey were all very friendly and exceptionally attentive. The food was just right, the open bar was great, and the boat was very comfortable and clean. And of course, we saw many whales during the sail. Highly recommend!

Wonderful whale watching excursion !! Amazing to see so many whales and captain did an exceptional job narrating and discussing the whales. Food was great - open bar and the staff and others on the boat were kind and welcoming. Family friendly. Especially loved that the boat was large and not too crowded so we could see the whales and move around the boat. A MUST DO excursion while at Maui !!
