  • What You Can Expect

This glorious folly was built in the 19th century by the famed "mad" King Ludwig II, a man intoxicated by myth and who himself became a legend. The shimmering white towers of the castle among the clouds are instantly recognizable to many and is the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle, and is also famous as the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Castle. To visit it is to step inside a fairy tale.

Your guide will tell the engaging story of King Ludwig's renowned and tragic reign, of his turbulent times, and of the obsession that drove him to build his fantasy castle in the mountains and ultimately destroyed him. Take an exclusive internal tour of the king's private chambers with a specialist castle guide.

Entrance fees to the Neuschwanstein Castle are not included. A supplement of 12 euros (per person) is payable direct. This guided tour includes advance booking so you can skip long lines and gain quick access to the Neuschwanstein Castle. Don't waste time waiting in lines on vacation!

The journey to Neuschwanstein takes approximately 2 hours by train. Germany's rail system is world renown and this journey to the Alps is no exception. Offering spectacular views, trains are clean, comfortable and equipped with washrooms. Feel free to walk around and chat to your fellow travellers as well as your guide, who can answer any questions about Munich and Bavaria.

    Cancellation Policy

Package is cancellable prior to three days from the commencement of the service.

Thank you, Thomas, for an amazing tour! You were so knowledgeable about the castle and Ludwig2. My son and I had the best day thanks to you. Neuschwanstein should be a must on anyone's list who is traveling to Germany. I will definitely be visiting again.

Aiden our tour guide was brilliant. He was friendly, engaging, helpful and had what some of the tour guides in the castle lacked a personality and humour. He offered help and advice about Munich on the way back, recommendations, told the story of Ludwig passionately and memorably. The rain was pouring but Aiden kept the mood up.

We had a wonderful time on the tour. We especially enjoyed Austin and his knowledge- plus he made everything more fun.

It is possible to visit Neuschwanstein Castle from Munich without using the services of a tour operator. The return fare for the 2 hour train journey to Fussen is 32 euros for an adult, if you wait until after 9am to leave. The bus from Fussen to Hohenschwangau is a few more euros and to avoid a 45 minute walk up the hill you will need to pay a few more euros again. However, unless you have reserved your timed-entry ticket to the castle online in advance, you may find you have made the entire journey for nothing. This is no joke - we saw plenty of people turned away, because although 60 tourists are shunted into the castle every 5 minutes, there are still many more people who want to visit than can be accommodated.

When we realised we had left it too late to reserve a castle ticket we decided to book a tour from Munich through La Vacanza Travel. The tour was actually delivered by a company called Radius, and specifically conducted by a Texan ex-teacher called Austin. This cost us 41 per person, not including entrance to the castle, which had to be paid for separately. The crucial point is that Radius had reserved the tickets so we were certain to get in. And it cost us almost exactly the same as doing it independently would have done.

So even if Austin had been a rubbish guide, I would still recommend this tour. But Austin was the very antithesis of a rubbish guide. He is a natural educator, an entertainer, a great enthusiast for Bavaria, very funny, very knowledgeable about history and very thoughtful in his analyses. I particularly liked the analogies he drew between historical figures and modern celebrities, such as Bill Clinton, Donald Trump and Michael Jackson, which helped us to understand how they were viewed in their time.

Within the castle walls we had to have a state tourist board guide, who was awful. But whenever Austin was with us, on the platform, on the train, on the bus, in the queue for the Marienbrucke where the classic castle photo is taken he was stuffing us full of knowledge. Thank you Austin, you made a day trip into a truly memorable experience.

Except for the rain, great tour guide who really knew his history and understood Americans too since he has one American parent and one German parent! Would have been nice to take pictures inside.
