We were lucky to get a two day booking for the price of one day, it was the last day of the offer. It was good to be on the open deck to be able to see the architecture. Handy to hop on and off although the subway is easy to use, and cheap. One point to watch is that all buses end up in Times Square at 5 in the afternoon. This means the last bus is obviously earlier from downtown. Also when the later buses arrive at say a popular stop in the afternoon they are already full and the long queue at the bus stop will be full of disappointed people who are not going to get back to their hotel on the bus.

I have done several hop in hop offs in other cities. This New York hop on hop off is TERRIBLE in comparison! First off, we were terribly disappointed that there was no actual live person narrating the tour. There were these horrible audio recordings that were mostly of music that I don’t wanna hear with very minor intermittent interruptions to tell me about the neighborhood we’re passing through. We terribly missed having an actual human telling us what we were looking at in real time. There was so much that we were seeing that was not explained in the prerecorded audio. Additionally, the bus took horrible routes that missed viewing actual landmarks. We never saw Chinatown, little Italy, Columbus circle, Statue of Liberty… meanwhile the map boasts passing through these spots. The bus took the worst possible routes with the most traffic and no real views. This was just a really expensive bus ride through manhattan with no real perks. We did the red line in its entirety with much disappointment. We tried the uptown blue line but the first bus broke down and then the second bus jerked its way through bumper to bumper traffic, so we opted to get off and take the subway to our destination. By the way, took us 4 minutes on the subway what would have taken this bus 40 minutes to do- time wasted for tourists on this bus. Shame on this company. They should get some pointers from Philadelphia lines and learn from what they do… a MUCH better system than this one!

The view was great and a lot of busses. I would recommend a newbie to New York use it to initially get around

A few tips - the downtown loop is enjoyable and a great way to see the city. It's a bit slow and time-consuming, due to traffic, etc, but we enjoyed it. The uptown loop is a lot shorter. We waited a long time for the bus so we walked from the MET down to Times Square in less time than taking the bus through traffic. If I were you, I'd take the downtown loop, but skip the uptown loop. You can just walk the best parts in 45 minutes. If you go before April 30, you get a second day pass for free. There's tons of people trying to sell you passes all over the city, I'd stick with the official Big Bus staff. Don't use it for transportation, but a nice sight-seeing tour.

In the last 2 weeks I have done Big Bus tours in San Francisco, Miami and now New York. The routes chosen by the company have been good. The commentary on all 3 tours was automated. Most of the time we were listening to music - no commentary, no local information. The commentary on the tour we did in New York today was abysmal. Almost no information other than what is written in their brochure. I will not be using the Big Bus company again.
