Overview

This is an unique opportunity to walk in a private protected forest reserve and learn about the cultural and historical uses of the forest in the area. The walk is an easy stroll that is not strenuous. You may have the opportunity to spot some rare birds and butterflies that frequent the fringes of the forest. See and photograph the rare White Lion and other wild cats of South Africa.

Itinerary

Enjoy a 2 hour relaxed guided forest walk along historical logging paths in our private forest reserve. This protected forest is home to giant hardwood trees, interesting fungi, mushrooms and orchids, with paths that meander down to mossy, pebbled streams. Spot the brilliant flash of red from the Knysna Loerie and if you are lucky, you may see the rare and shy Narina Trogon. Let our guide reveal the secret life of the forest to you, along with the fascinating history of the forest and cultural uses of the plants and animal life.

The walk finishes in a natural opening in the forest where (weather depending) we stop for a freshly prepared picnic lunch before heading back along the trail and out of this enchanting world of green. If the weather is inclement, our picnic takes place overlooking the cheetah dam which is close by with ablutions.

The second part of this combo activity is a 1 hour guided tour to see the indigenous wild cats of South Africa and other local wildlife at Tenikwa and learn about the conservation work we do.

My husband & I chose the Forest Walk with Picnic and Wildlife Tour and were not disappointed. Seeing up close meerkats, birds, tortoises and a variety of cats was fascinating and our guide, Sandile, was very knowledgeable and informative. The cats were amazing to see in such close proximity and the white lion was magnificent. After the wildlife tour, Sandile then took us on the Forest Walk pointing out various plants and trees. He was great in explaining the various medicinal uses of the plants and also how indigenous people used them in their daily lives. He also pointed out evidence of Koi people - a rock that had been hollowed out in which tools would be sharpened. Sandile was an excellent guide and his interest, knowledge and passion whether for the animals or the forest was so evident. We highly recommend this tour.

My wife and I enjoyed this so much that we booked to do it again before we left! The forest walk was beautiful and our guide was extremely knowledgable about the flora and fauna of the area. This was followed up by a really nice authentic South African picnic lunch. The wildlife tour was fantastic. We got to see all the resident animals from Tenikwa and to learn about their habits, behaviours and backgrounds. Totally recommend!
