Overview

This is Vancouver’s only ancient big tree tour. Within walking distance from downtown Vancouver you will be guided by well known big tree seeker Colin Spratt through Vancouver’s last ancient forest located in historic Stanley Park. The tour lasts around 2 hours and in that period of time you will visit Canada’s largest maple tree, 1000 year old cedars, massive firs, and you will also learn about the history of the park and the history of the original coast Salish people who called the park home. We will walk various trails in the park and see the most impressive giants still standing. Some of these giants are hidden unless you know where to look. Using old maps, postcards over a hundred years old, and photos from Vancouver’s archive, we piece together the history of the ancient forest and the urban environment. This is a completely unique chance to experience the last remaining part of Vancouver's now lost original forested landscape.

My wife and I (and 5 other strangers) took the 2pm Friday April 19th tour and it was truly and wonderful stroll through the trees and peoples who have shaped Stanley park over the centuries..Kudos to Colin Spratt for being totally immersed in the subject matter, and for being able to keep the tour interesting, informative and fun throughout the 3 hours - he even has post cards from the 1920’s to illustrate the transformation of the various trees and forests that exist there!! I’ve been traveling to Vancouver for 35+ years and this is the first time that I’ve seen Stanley Park as the forest it is - stunning! I would highly recommend this tour for people of all ages who enjoy a modest walk an are curious about Ancient Trees!

This 3 hour tour was definitely the highlight of my trip to Vancouver. Our tour guide, Colin, began with a brief and essential history of the land we were walking on explaining the habits and rituals of original, indigenous inhabitants. We learned of the economy and ecology of the place - all told through the stories of some of the most amazing trees one could ever behold. The greatest takeaway was the interconnectivity of all aspects of this spectacular eco-system - this experience left me a better, brighter environmentalist than I was at the start. It is also worth noting that the time spent in this natural forest setting off the beaten path of Stanley Park left us with us with an overall sense of calm and well being that has lasted for days afterward. This is an opportunity well worth your time.
