Stop At: Jardines de Belvedere, Prinz-Eugen-Strasse 27, Vienna 1030 Austria

The Belvedere Palace in Vienna is a palace complex that Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt (1668–1745) had built between 1714 and 1723 for Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). The Upper Belvedere and the Lower Belvedere (named because of their location on a slope south of what was then the city) form a baroque ensemble with the connecting gardens. The two palace buildings now house the collections of the Belvedere (Austrian Gallery Belvedere) and rooms for temporary exhibitions. On May 15, 1955, the Austrian State Treaty was signed in the Upper Belvedere. Even today you have a great view over Vienna from here. That's what the castle was called "Belvedere" - for the beautiful view. The prince had a private zoo built in the palace garden.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Hundertwasserhaus, Kegelgasse 36-38, Vienna 1030 Austria

The Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna bears the unmistakable signature of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000), the colorful facade of the Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna draws the eye almost magically. Trees and bushes on the balconies and roof terraces make the Hundertwasserhaus a green oasis in the middle of the city. Colorful and unusual, the home features uneven floors in the hallways and is spacious in design. Around 250 trees and bushes were planted in 1985 and have now grown into stately trees - a real park on the roofs of the house.
We visit the Hundertwasser House and the neighbouring Hundertwasser Gallery with the souvenir shop, where inexpensive art prints by the visual artist and architect can also be purchased.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Schonbrunn Palace, Schlosstrasse 47, Vienna 1130 Austria

Schönbrunn Palace (German: Schloss Schönbrunn) was the most important summer residence of the Habsburg emperors in Vienna. The name Schönbrunn ("beautiful spring") goes back to an artesian well from which the court drew water. The 1,441-room Rococo palace is one of the country's most significant architectural, cultural, and historical monuments. The history of the palace and its extensive gardens spans more than 300 years, reflecting the changing tastes, interests and aspirations of successive Habsburg monarchs.
The area of the Schönbrunn Palace Park is the same size as the entire Principality of Monaco and on its west side it houses the historic Vienna Zoo, which was founded in 1752 and is therefore the oldest zoo in the world. Voted the best zoo in Europe six times in a row, it is home to 7,780 animals from 667 species and shows technical innovations on 42 acres. Castle and zoo are among the 5 most important tourist attractions.

Duration: 45 minutes

Stop At: St. Stephen's Cathedral, Stephansplatz 3, Vienna 1010 Austria

The Roman Catholic cathedral, called "Steffl" for short by the Viennese, is considered a landmark and is sometimes also referred to as a national shrine. The cathedral is one of the most important Romanesque-Gothic buildings in Austria. Parts of the late Romanesque predecessor building from 1230 are still preserved. At 136.4 meters, the south tower is the tallest. In the former Austro-Hungarian monarchy, no church was allowed to be built higher than the south tower of St. Stephen's Cathedral. It is an architectural masterpiece of its time and when the tower was completed it was the tallest free-standing building in the world for over 50 years. We visit the cathedrals in-and outside, have the opportunity to take the elevator up the north tower, take a look at the old town and see the largest bell in Europe, the "Pummerin", a large bell that was installed in 1558, with a diameter of 3.16 m and a weight of 22,511 kg.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: The Hofburg, Michaelerkuppel, Vienna 1010 Austria

From the 13th century to 1918, the Hofburg zu Wien was the residence of the Habsburgs in Vienna. Since the end of 1946 it has been the official residence of the Austrian Federal President. It houses the Austrian National Library and various museums, including the Albertina art gallery. The Habsburg Empire was ruled from the Hofburg for more than seven centuries. The area that was created during this time covers an area of around 24 hectares, making it the largest building complex in Europe that was built for non-religious purposes. The complex also includes two sacred buildings: the Hofburg chapel and the Augustinian church. If you add the twin museums and the old court stables - today's Museums Quartier - to the Hofburg grounds, the total area is around 50 hectares.

We were in Vienna for business and had a 4 hour block free to see the city. There were 14 of us and Chris and Vlady organized a wonderful tour for us, hitting all the highlights of Vienna in 2 Mercedes vans, linked via audio. Many of us knew after the tour places we wanted to check out in other free blocks of time during our trip. We had a wonderful experience!
