Located in Thekkady, Kerala, particularly set high at the Western Ghat ranges, this wildlife sanctuary is the perfect example of nature’s bounty with rich biodiversity and great scenic beauty. It is regarded as the most protected area for tigers and elephants and the tigers. The core zone of its 925 square kilometers of area was declared as the Periyar National Park in 1982.
At the heart of the sanctuary, there is a picturesque artificial lake that was created about 100 years ago and is known for its thick forests and wild elephants that live there. It also covers intense valleys that contain tropical evergreen forests with thick trees that can fully grow at an amazing height of up to 140 feet, preventing the sun’s rays to penetrate the ground, and some marshy grasslands along the edges of the lake and other bodies of water.
These patches of greens plays an important role in keeping many of the animal species in the sanctuary well, which include sambars, bisons, langurs, and as previously mentioned, tigers and elephants. And as the sanctuary is firmly established on both foreign tourist and local Indian trails, it offers jungle walks that make your visit more enjoyable.
