The title “God’s Own Country” that Kerala holds is generally attributed to the state’s pervasive scenic beauty. Also, it has a large number of temples, including those that date back centuries ago and feature architectural styles that uphold certain traditions that are unique to the state. Here are some of the best temples that your Kerala holiday packages should include for the best experience:

  • Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple - Located in Trivandrum, this great Vishnu temple features a hundred-feet-high gopuram that was built in Dravidian style. An idol of Vishnu here is seen reclining on the serpent, Anantha, and is made of a rare combination that you will not see anywhere else in the world. To view this golden idol, you are required to do it part by part from three windows. Other features in this temple, which are a treat to watch, include stone carvings and murals. As tradition in this temple continues, the treasures in its vaults still remain safe.
  • Ambalapuzha Srikrishna Temple - This is an ancient temple that was constructed in the early 17th century, where Krishna is worshipped in his form as a child, known as Unni Krishna. It is known for the fact that it was the place the deity from Guruvayoor was transferred to for safekeeping when the place expected a raid by Tipu Sultan, though it never happened. It is also famous for the Palpayasam, which is a delicious offering, and its accessibility to Alappuzha, where you can enjoy a backwater cruise.
  • Attukal Bhagavathy Temple - This temple is dedicated to Devi Parvathy, the Hindu goddess of fertility, love and devotion, and has become a favorite attraction for women on a certain day in mid February to mid March, when they prepare Pongala, which is a recipe of rice, coconut, jaggery and ghee cooked in mud pots. The event is participated by thousands of people, where the line of devotees would extend to the road outside.
  • Guruvayoor Srikrishna Temple - This ancient temple holds many legends associated with its origin and is famous for the significant events and festivals celebrated there, including the Krishnanattam dance drama about the childhood of Krishna that is enacted here once a year and is not allowed to be performed elsewhere. The temple is also associated with some great singers of south Indian music, as well as Malayalam and Sanskrit poets. This place is so popular among Keralites that many couples choose to be wed here.
  • Chottanikkara Temple - The patron deity that is celebrated in this temple is Bhagawati, who is the divine mother who cares specially for people suffering from mental illness, who are said to be brought here and cured.
  • Vadakkunathan Temple - This temple is nestled in a 9-acre area that is surrounded by a fortified wall with towered entrances on four sides. It particularly sits on a hillock, with the city flowing around it.
