Eid-ul-Fitr in Mauritius
Eid-ul-Fitr, which is also spelled or represented as “Eid al-Fitr” or simply “Eid”, is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal that marks the end of Ramadan, which is observed by Muslims around the world as a month of prayer and fasting. In Mauritius, this event is also observed by its Muslim communities to celebrate the end of the holy month, which is usually held in the month of October or November, as the dates would vary depending on the calendar of Islam.
All Mauritian Muslims celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm, which involves praying, donating alms to the poor, sharing food and spending time with family and friends. You will see that many Muslims would attend communal prayers, give charity in the form of food (zakat al-fitr) and listen to a sermon (locally known as khutba) during this festival, with prayers being held mostly outside or in locations with large areas, such as sports arenas.
Many Muslims from all over the world would even travel far to this country to participate in the activities in this festival. Also, some communities would organize various festivities, such as events for children or communal meals, during this time of the year. (See All: Mauritius holiday packages)
