The complex of Khajuraho group of temples represent the most unique architecture and artistic creation created between AD 950 - 1050 in India.
Khajuraho was capital of Chandela Rulers, A dynasty of Rajput origin which came into power at beginning of 10th century. This dynasty was at its best during AD 950 - 1050
The great traveller Ibn Battuta mentioned staying in Khajuraho in 1335
Total of 85 temples were constructed 22 of them still exists, disseminated with in an area of about 6 Sq Kms.
The most important group of monument is located in the western zone with 10 temples.
Westerns zone temples include the temple of Varaha, Lakshmana, Mantangeshwara, Kandariya, Mahadeva, Chitragupta, Chopra Tank, Parvati, Vishwanatha and Nandi.
Temple of Vishnu, now famous as Lakshmana temple amongst the other 10 in western zone was built in AD 954 by Yasovarman
Visvanath, Parsvanath and vidyanatha temples were built during the time of king Dhanga the successor of Yasovarman
Kandariya Mahadeva is the largest and grandest temple and is attributed to King Ganda ( 1017-1029)Khajuraho group of Temples are famous for its unique depiction of all aspect of human life through sculptures.
In accordance with the prevailing rule of architecture, erotic depiction got space in specific part of the structures.
