Top 5 Things to Do when in Moscow, Russia

#1 Pay a visit to the Red Square

If you have to visit Moscow on limited time, head straight for the Red Square. It may be a top tourist attraction but the most significant buildings surround the area. The embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin is contained in Lenin's Mausoleum.

On the south side is the very attractive and colourful Saint Basil's Cathedral and the Kremlin with its five squares, 18 buildings, and 20 towers.

The GUM department store lies to the east of the square, with the Kazan Cathedral next to it. To the north of the square is the State Historical Museum.

#2 Try some Soviet-era arcade games

A couple of Russian students decided to preserve the various entertainment options during the Soviet Era. Housed in a technical school's basement, the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games contains around 60 machines with only a few left unplayable.

Included in the collection are video games, pinball machines, and a hockey foosball game. Although the machines are in Russian, you don't need to understand the language to understand how the game is to be played.

#3 See Russian space achievements

Russia and the US have been the biggest names in space endeavors. Since getting to space was quite an achievement, especially back in the day, it isn't a surprise that both countries also have museums dedicated to the achievements of their space programs.

In Moscow, a visit to the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics provides insight into the achievements of Russia in space. There are about 85,000 items in the display, including taxidermy space dogs.

Apart from seeing Russian space achievements, you can also experience what it was like being a cosmonaut by eating authentic space food at the All-Russian Exhibition Center, a public park and exhibition space.

Not all achievements by Russians in space were made by humans; dogs took part as well. A dog called Laika was the “first animal to orbit the earth.” There is an emphasis put on that as she died within hours of being launched into space from overheating.

As a tribute, she has a statue located close to a military facility.

#4 See cats put on a show

The cats sure do amazing tricks, but the circus has been accused of animal cruelty, with some suggesting that the show be boycotted. The founder of the cat theater, Yuri Kuklachev, has denied any wrongdoing and even won a defamation suit in 2009.

#5 Buy some souvenirs at the Izmaylovsky Market

This is the best-known flea market, as well as the biggest, in the city. It's a place where you can buy an assortment of things. It's also one of the largest green spaces in the city so you can do a bit of rest and relaxation here as well.

Moscow is a large city with lots of things to do, so take the suggestions listed here as possible activities while you're in town.
