He called and offered a different experience, a German dinner at a local restaurant with a tour of the area around hotel. We agreed and that was a mistake. He was way over his skies! He did not know the area and wasn't able to give us much information. I asked about several statues/pieces of art we passed. Ask her child say was it was art... The restaurant he took is to was new to him, not familiar with the food or the fact that he needed cash for this place. Walking aimlessly was disappointing. On the positive side, he was cordial. He is an immigrant from Syria and has had an unbelievably difficult life. We learned more about Syria than Berlin. The restaurant did not specialize in German food, that's what we asked for. They had a couple German choices. Their chef was from Italian so the pasta dishes were supposedly amazing but we wanted German on our first night in this country. We would have been better off sticking to the tour plan we originally booked.

I really enjoyed my time with Joel, my tour guide. Not only did he take me to some very interesting (and delicious) places that I probably wouldn't have known about if I didn't take the tour, but he gave me a glimpse of East Berlin in general: old, a bit rough in some areas, and even changing due to gentrification in some areas, but still surviving. And just like West Berlin, its history shows through all of its neighborhoods. Very satisfying.

Had so much fun learning about the city and eating our way through it. We loved eating all the German food. Our guide was amazing and very knowledgeable about the food in Berlin. She took us places we would have never found ourselves from oldest bakery in town to the best kebabs!!
