Istanbul Archaeological Museum which is one of Turkey’s first museum works is a legacy from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic. Although the first emergence of the idea of the museum dates back to the time of Mehmed the Conqueror, its actual realization was with the establishment of the Imperial Museum in 1869.

Overall very disappointing experience. The museum in itself is very big and beautiful but the tour guide from Istanbul tourist pass is a total rip off. My mum and I booked this tour off of istanbul.com so we thought it would be a reliable source. First we payed 17€ entrance instead of the standard 10€ that the museum offered. Then once we got in, the "guide" told us she couldn't come inside the museum with us because this was not allowed, this is also a lie as I saw many tour guides inside, and she proceeded on presenting the history of the museum in 2 mins and that was it ! Then she told us we had to hurry up because the museum was closing in 20min when in reality it was closing in 1h. She told us to visit the toilets because they were apparently magnificent, we went and there was nothing special to them. I also asked her for the code to the audio guide and she told me the museum had none, which is also a lie because there were signs everywhere saying that you needed to scan your ticket to access the guide. Me, my mum and the other couple that were with us were appalled by this, I know its not the tour guides fault directly but this company is a scam!

Despite a bit of a mix up at the start of this visit - our Guide was late and couldn't remain with us at the museum, it was an excellent visit. The quality of Greek and Roman artefacts on display was exceptional. I loved it. The museum grounds and location are peaceful next to Gulhane Park.

Visiting historic spots was a great thrill but felt cheated because the guide seemed to be rushing thru the sites. Did not even have time to read the plaques that provided information about the place.

Il museo merita la visita anche solo per i sarcofaghi della prima sala, interessante anche la statuaria; purtroppo parte del museo era chiusa. Consiglio comunque la visita a qualunque ora soprattutto quando in altre attrazione c'è tanta coda.
