Overview

Come along for a guided walk on the comic genius Charlie Chaplin!

Chaplin was born in Kennington, London in 1889 and lived their until he was 21. He was born into and spent his early years in great poverty in (at the time) one of the poorest areas of London. As a teenager he joined a performing group in nearby Brixton and during a tour of the U.S was spotted performing by a scout for Sennett Studios, they signed him up and the rest is history!

I will guide you round the streets visiting various places that influenced him, the houses where he lived as a child and describing the conditions of the area in late Victorian London. I will tell you the story of his relationships with his mentally ill mother, alcoholic father and the close bond he had with his half brother Sydney.

We finish the walk at the place where he learnt his comedy walk!

The walk lasts just under 2 hours.  We meet outside Kennington Tube Station.

We meet outside Kennington Tube Station (1 stop from Waterloo).

The walk takes place every Wednesday afternoon at 1:30pm.  If you have a group of over 5 people and wish to book a private guided walk, please contact me for alternative times and days.

The walk is guided around the streets and we walk just over 1 mile.

I dress up in Victorian costume and present pictures of Chaplin to try and bring his story to life.  His life is a classic rags to riches story.

I dress up in Victorian costume and show you pictures of him, his influences, to try and bring his story to life.

It finishes in a Victorian pub not far from Vauxhall Tube Station.

I went on one of the Culture Seekers Chaplin Walks last Sunday and I can highly recommend it. I enjoyed every moment, from the start when the Tour Guide met the group dressed in a life-like Chaplin costume, to the end, when he invited us to enter a small contest to win a prize! In between, we walked short distances between different buildings in the Lambeth area of London where Chaplin spent his early years. At each stop, Robert gave a very interesting talk, recounting the history behind the building before us and bringing his often poignant tales to life with added humour.

Excellent walk in every respect! Interesting, and oftentimes sad-stroke-shocking, story behind formative years of Charlie Chaplin that also brings London's Lambeth area at the turn of the 19/20th centuries back to life. If you want to know the stuff this world famous comedian was really made of or wondering what the life of less well-off people was like a hundred and something years ago, then you are in for a teat! The tour is very well organised, captivating and will leave you wanting to see and know more. Definitely not a one to miss!

I’m sure this tour is great but unfortunately after booking 24 hours before the scheduled start my order sat pending until 2 hrs before it was due to start, so assuming all would be ok I travelled to London only to be told it was cancelled. So unless you live within spitting distant of Kennington I’d book this well in advance and hopefully you’ll be given enough notice to attend.

Very fascinating tour. It was enjoyable and full of interesting facts from the start to the end. Robert was brilliant and very passionate about the subject. He thoroughly complemented the presentation with the use of photographs and images. I would definitely recommend this tour.
