Overview

The Royal Mews is one of the finest working stables in the world and is responsible for all road travel arrangements for His Majesty The King and members of the Royal Family. It is home to the royal collection of historic coaches and carriages used in State and ceremonial occasions, such as The King's coronation, royal weddings and Trooping the Colour.

During your visit, you will see the Diamond Jubilee State Coach. This beautiful coach incorporates items from over 100 historic sites across Britain, including the Royal Yacht Britannia, 10 Downing Street and HMS Victory.

A highlight of a visit to the Royal Mews includes the Gold State Coach, used in every monarch’s coronation since 1821. The coach is covered almost entirely in real gold lead, weighs almost four tonnes and needs eight horses to pull it.

The Royal Mews is also home to the Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays, The King’s horses that pull the coaches and carriages. You may see some of the horses during your visit.

Visit: Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace Road, London SW1W 1QH England

The Royal Mews is one of the finest working stables anywhere in the world and home to the royal collection of historic coaches and carriages, and the Windsor Grey's and Cleveland Bays, The horses that pull the carriages. To this day, the stables are still responsible for all road travel arrangements for His Majesty The King and other members of the Royal Family.

The Royal Mews has been the location of the sovereign’s road transport since 1760 when George III moved his carriage collection closer to his new home at Buckingham Palace – since then it has been updated by several monarchs in keeping with their changing transport needs.

Among the historic coaches and carriages on display are the spectacular Diamond Jubilee State Coach.

As well as a complimentary multimedia guide for every visitor, the Royal Mews also offers regular guided tours where visitors can learn the history of the Mews and its association with the British monarchy.

Really glad I visited The Royal Mews - definitely recommended. This is a visit that takes less than an hour so should be paired with The Kings Gallery and perhaps afternoon tea at The Reubens Hotel just across the road. There was an excellent and knowledgeable guided tour of the coaches & cars when I was there - I’m not sure if this is a permanent offering but it was really worthwhile. Seeing such iconic coaches such as The Jubilee State Coach, the Gold Coach and The Glass Coach and thinking of the historic moments they have been a part of was really lovely

We were very interested in touring Buckingham Palace but tickets were sold out for our travel dates. Instead we booked the Royal Mews tour which got us up close and personal with the horses and carriages used by the Royal family. Our guide seemed very knowledgeable and gave us some history about her favorite carriages and stories about the horses, etc. It was as interesting as expected. We booked tickets for this tour the night before, and for the same day we were going to see the changing of the guards at BP and it worked out perfectly. My 11 year old son was happy to have gone on this Royal Mews tour and notes it as one of the highlights of the trip. We were honored to meet one of the horses who worked the Coronation which was very exciting!

Very enjoyable, amazing, and interesting. The audio was clear, and you're able to explore the exhibits at a leisurely pace. It is not too large so that you can easily plan another attraction on the same day. I didn't expect to enjoy this so much!

Interesting background tour into the royal transportation options. The tour guide was knowledgeable but we left out tour to move more quickly through the displays. You don't have to follow the guide, which offers flexibility if you have kids or need to move a little quicker. Lovely to see the horses, especially if they are doing some training during your visit.

We enjoyed our visit to the Royal Mews. It was interesting getting to see the elaborate coaches and cars in person. You get to see some current and retired horse carriages used by the Royal family and learn when and what they were used for. The Gold State Coach was crazy opulent. There were a few horses we could see, too. We did a self-guided tour and it was quick. We were there for maybe 30 minutes. We toured the Royal Mews because they were not doing tours of the palace while we were there and this was our way of still seeing part of Buckingham Palace. It was pricey for how quickly you can see it all, but I am glad we did it.
