Dive into the captivating world of Sumo, a distinctly Japanese sport with a rich history spanning over a millennium. Today, Sumo wrestlers maintain their ancient traditions, residing in dedicated sumo stables, and engaging in rigorous daily practice sessions.

Local guides will explain the history, roots, customs, and even the appeal of sumo
Sumo has a long history, and there are many fascinating aspects that cannot be understood only by watching sumo. Since private conversation is strictly prohibited during the practice tour, we will also provide supplementary materials for the tour.

Getting to see training and customs of Sumo. Sure, it’s not an official tournament but I think that’s better. We got to sit very close to the sumo training ring and watch bout after bout of training matches. We got to observe training customs and even some “hazing” (really just tougher training regiments) a newbie. As an avid, fan of histories on all sides of the world, the experience of a sumo stable I can only imagine is similar to a Roman gladiatorial ludus. Only improvement recommended is that the was plenty of space for viewers to spread out in the front row, some of my friends in the back had to make adjustments for a better view. Perhaps a semicircle to get as my people in front as possible.

Quite a mesmerizing experience to watch the many fights in just 1 hour! Would highly recommend. Our guide explained everything before we went in to the venue as you have to sit quietly on a mat in front of the wrestlers.

I would highly recommend this experience, especially for those interested in Sumo and Japanese culture. Our tour guide was a very sweet and funny lady who enjoyed Sumo herself, therefore was knowledgeable about the sport and able to answer questions after we watched the practice. The practice itself could be a bit awkward at first as there was no formal introductions or greetings. You will have to sit criss cross for an hour with no back support so just be aware of that. You are allowed to take photos, but no videos. I really enjoyed that this wasn't a performative/gimmick like excursion, but truly spectators viewing an early morning Sumo practice. The practice itself could be a bit awkward at first as there was no formal introductions or greetings.

First.. thankyou to Hind who was a great tour operator and helped me when I thought I'd lost my phone... She walked me back to the stables but we couldn't find it. I took the train back to my hotel and somehow my phone was in the hoodie part of my jacket. Thanks Hind.. hope you see this message. As for the Sumo..it was really interesting to be so close and to see the Sumo wrestlers and the ring and to hear everything.. incredibly close up experience. Would definitely recommend.
