At the behest of an Indian friend who really recommended Fatehpur Sikri I booked a half day tour. Rahul the driver arrived on time 10am and was very good, quickly weaving through Agra into Fatehpur Sikri, where I was left to a guide and to take a bus into the fort. My guide was polite but felt rushed, walking away as I attempted to take pictures. The fort itself was impressive but did not feel as grand nor interesting as Agra Fort. Walking from the Fort to Holy Tomb of Hazrat Salim Chishti, the latter was impressive from afar; but on arrival was directed to purchase cloth for wishes and again felt rushed to exit. Tipping and additional charges were expected. On arrival to the fort even after buying online tickets, and at the Tomb for the gentlemen keeping shoes (slippers were provided to enter the tomb). Return coach to the taxi area, led to the guide pointing to artisan areas whereupon skilled tradesmen proposed $75 USD for their hand crafted statues; and a tip. Returning to the taxi, I was taken to a restaurant by a Toll Crossing. The staff were polite but the food average. An additional 1200 INR. Return to the hotel was smooth, another tip dispensed. Overall I would not say the trip is good value for money, spent double the time on the road to and from Agra than in the Fort and Tomb (1 hour based on pictures' timestamps). Taj Mahal with Mausoleum entry gave shoe covers without needing tips. Taj Mahal and the Agra fort are more interesting and accessible from Agra in my opinion.

We were based in Agra for a few days and took this half day trip to Fatepur Sikri on a Friday. It is about a 1hour 30 minute car journey from Agra. The driver was careful and skilful, the car comfortable, clean and cool. Our guide was friendly, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the site; the visit helped put into context some of the Mughal sites we had seen in Delhi a few days earlier. Fatepur Sikri is well worth the visit for itself, stunning architecture and views. We had a great time and I would recommend this trip and the operator. One thing all the guides offer, on all the trips, is to bring you to see some local crafts related to your booked visit: E.g. carpets, needle work, jewellery or marble working. You do not have to visit the craft places if you do not want to. We did on one occasion and whilst it was interesting, the crafts people were skilled and there was explicitly no obligation to buy anything, there was clearly a hope that one might. If you like shopping with a private demonstration of local crafts you will probably get the opportunity, but if that makes you uncomfortable I would avoid.

Our driver was on time for the pickup from our hotel. On reaching Fatehpur Sikri we were met by our guide. He provided a lot of information about the site over and above what was available on the information boards around the site, and also pointed out details that we would have completely overlooked. The tour ended with a visit to the mosque, which was still functioning so I had to cover my shorts. (It might have been useful if the tour description had included information about the dress code.) Our guide also encouraged us in the direction of making a wish at the shrine. However, we were shocked by the price quoted for buying a bit of cloth to leave at the shrine. When we declined this our guide did not appear entirely pleased. Our trip included a buffet lunch. We were given a choice as to whether we wanted this in Fatehpur Sikri or Agra. We opted for the latter. We were slightly concerned when we were taken to the same restaurant that we had been to the previous day on the Taj Mahal/Agra Fort trip and where we had been given a set meal. It appears that foreign tour groups are often taken here. However, we were given a different meal (a Thali selection) and could ask for top-ups of any of the dishes; so a buffet of sorts it was. Overall the trip was worth it.
