The Grachtengordel (known in English as the Canal District) is a neighborhood in Amsterdam, Netherlands located in the Centrum district. The seventeenth-century canals of Amsterdam, located in the center of Amsterdam, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in August 2010.[1] The Amsterdam Canal District consists of the area around the city’s four main canals: the Singel, the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht, and the Prinsengracht. From the Brouwersgracht, the canals are generally parallel with one another, leading gradually southeast into the Amstel river.

Many of the canal houses in the Amsterdam Canal District are from the Dutch Golden Age, 17th century. Many of these buildings, however, underwent restoration or reconstruction in various centuries, meaning that these building display many different architectural styles and facades

The Westerkerk was built between 1620 and 1631 in Renaissance style according to designs by architect Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621). He is buried in the church he designed earlier: the 'Zuiderkerk'. The building of the Westerkerk was finished and completed by his son Pieter de Keyser (1595-1676) and inaugurated on June 8, 1631. The church has a length of 58 meters and a width of 29 meters. The high nave is flanked by the two lower aisles. The three-aisled basilica has a rectangular plan with two transepts of equal dimensions. As a result, the plan for this church was given the form of two Greek crosses connected with each other.

Pass By: Magere Brug, Kerkstraat Nieuwe Kerkstraat, Amsterdam The Netherlands

The famous skinny bridge across the river Amstel and opposite of the Carré theatre, is an Old Dutch design wooden bridge known as a double-swipe (balanced) bridge. Tradition relates that the bridge was named after the sisters Mager, who were supposed to live on opposite sides of the river. They are said to have had the wooden bridge built to make it easier to visit one another. However it appears more likely, that the original bridge acquired the name from being so narrow (mager means skinny in Dutch), that it was hard for two pedestrians to pass one along another.

Nice views but the audio was too low. Also, need warning signs about height of boat. I bumped my head while going to bathroom.

A massive disappointment. We are seniors. No one helped us on or off of the boat. Steep steps. Only One bar to hold onto on one side. Totally enclosed very very hot. They had the heat turned on full blast on the boat. The cruise was advertised as a night cruise over 60 minutes of the cruise was daylight. I want my money back. All of it. We have booked much with La Vacanza Travel. $ back now.

Not very happy Reasons: 1. Our family couldn’t even sit together because they allowed people to string out all over the boat. 2. No live guide, just a corny recorded soundtrack. Made it impossible to ask questions and it was impersonal. 3. Not enough time in the small quaint canals too much time in the open water/huge canals.

The guide made this trip, he had great humor and was a wonderful guide. The trip itself was an hour and a half and we were able to take snacks and drinks onboard. Boat was lovely and warm.

It was an experience to be on the water as we passed through centuries of history. I had done this tour in daylight. But nighttime showed us how people live in houseboats, canal homes, the stunning interior remodels while the history of the buildings contrasted. Definitely worth the trip.
