Stop At: Joods Historisch Museum, Nieuwe Amstelstraat 1, 1011 PL Amsterdam The Netherlands

Travel back to the dark days of World War II on a 2-hour walking tour of Amsterdam, and learn what life was like following the occupation of the Netherlands by the Germans in 1940-1945 and how Anne Frank became an icon of the brutality of suppression. Hear the story about her diary and how it came to be published by her father Otto Frank.

Meet your guide in front of the entrance of the Jewish Historical Museum, 15 minutes before the designated starting time of your tour. Stroll past monuments and buildings still marked by traces of war. Your guide will bring the history to life, giving you a sense of how the city’s citizens behaved during the occupation, and how they moved around in times of horror.

Learn why the Dutch tried to co-exist with the occupying army, and how the Dutch behaved towards the Jews of Amsterdam like Anne Frank. Hear about important events, such as the February Strike and Winter of Hunger.

Visit the Jewish neighborhood, and hear all about the Portuguese synagogue and Jewish Museum, the head office of the Jewish counsel, the dokwerker and the Auschwitz Monument. Discover locations the Dutch resistance offered as secret hiding places to families like the Franks. The tour ends next to the Anne Frank House, however: admission to Anne Frank’s House is not included.

Ideal for fans of European history, the tour also gives an insight into how the Jewish community lived, survived and still thrive in Amsterdam.

While this tour is themed around the Anne Frank story there is so much more to that part of Amsterdam's history. Our guide did a very good job of framing the historical points in the context of Amsterdam in the early 1900's to modern day. As a result we came away with a better understanding of what Anne and her whole community went through and what has made Amsterdam the amazing, vibrant city that it is.

Our guide Vince was excellent. He really brought the history and areas alive, and had a number of photographs and stories to share (since many buildings no longer exist). He really made the walking tour worthwhile, while we were immersed in such a tragic part of history. If you are interested in history, in the Jewish story of Amsterdam, and seeing the various areas of importance, take this tour. (We had visited the Anne Frank house earlier in the week, and it added to the overall knowledge.)

Very informative. Very interesting. Guide was very knowledgeable. I enjoyed the leisurely walk through the little streets of Amsterdam. Also impressed by brass plaques in the pavement.
