Overview

Located just a short distance from the bustling city center of Barcelona, Gracia is the perfect place to experience authentic Catalan culture and cuisine. Once an independent village, it has managed to maintain its traditional roots even after being absorbed by the city's urban expansion. On this food tour, you’ll explore hole-in-the-wall restaurants that offer home-cooked classics and visit beloved local bodegas for a taste of Catalonia that’s hard to come by elsewhere in the modern city.

Stop At: Cal Pep, Plaça de les Olles, 8, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona, Spain

The first stop on your Gracia food tour is a traditional bodega that’s been a staple of the local community since 1939. You’ll be transported to a bygone era of Barcelona from the moment you step through its doors. Enjoy classic Catalan dishes, sip a glass of vermouth and learn about the unique way of drinking wine in Catalonia

Duration: 40 minutes

Stop At: Placa de la Virreina, 08024 Barcelona Spain

After gaining an understanding of the neighborhood's history, we'll visit a small bakery that represents the fascinating blend of cultures within Gracia. Mustafa's Syrian pastry shop is a cherished local establishment for good reason—the smell of freshly baked goods will make your mouth water as soon as you step through the door. Sink your teeth into a decadent homemade pastry as your guide explains the influence of Arab culture on desserts in Spain.

Duration: 25 minutes

Stop At: Placa de Rius i Taulet, 08012 Barcelona Spain

rom there, it’s off to a deli that specializes in Spain's most renowned delicacy: cured ham. Watch and learn as a master carver slices it in front of you, and even try cutting a slice for yourself. Savor a variety of charcuterie and Catalan cheeses while sipping a refreshing glass of cava, which you'll soon learn has some notable differences with its well-known French counterpart, champagne. Afterwards, you'll follow your guide to the site of the old market and learn about the neighborhood's historic past.

Duration: 35 minutes

Stop At: Diània, Carrer de Mozart, 20, Gràcia, 08012 Barcelona, Spain

Next, it’s time to settle in for a delicious homemade lunch. Head a restaurant specializing in Valencian and Catalan food. Learn about the similarities and differences between these two regional cuisines, while you enjoy two typical dishes with a glass of red or white wine.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Xurreria Trebol, C/ de Còrsega, 341, Gràcia, 08037 Barcelona, Spain

Visited in the off season so our group was comfortably small (5 people plus guide). Thoughtful flow around town from starters to main to dessert in a mix of older and newer restaurants, bakeries, etc. It was an easy way to try several new foods. Our guide, Dominic, was knowledgeable and friendly. Easy to find starting point. Tasting menu can be easily adapted for vegetarians.

We stayed in Gracia and found this tour to be the perfect way to get introduced to the local neighborhood cuisine, history and culture. We thoroughly enjoyed taking this tour early in our visit and found ourselves returning to many of our tasting locations during our stay. Dom, our tour guide, who lives in Gracia, was fantastic! He was informative, friendly, articulate, detailed and very knowledgeable. He also sends a follow-up email of recommendations after the tour and is very responsive to any additional questions we had. We had a true Catalan culinary experience visiting hole-in-the-wall gems serving up home-cooked classics and regulars-only bodegas. I highly recommend this tour, you won't be disappointed!

What a great way to experience Barcelona! We met our guide Alexandra at a location in the Gracia neighborhood. Honestly, I didn't know anything about the neighborhood so it was really interesting to hear all about it. Gracia isn't touristy, so it was certainly not a place I'd have discovered by myself. Anyway, we started at a cool little hole in the wall kind of place that was formerly a meeting place for the resistance during the Spanish Civil War. It doesn't look like it's been updated much since then but wow, what food! First, Alex showed us how to drink like a local, which involved aiming a stream of wine from a bottle held up from on high (see photo of the expert below). Along with the wine, we had tripe, sardines, bread with tomatoes, chips and vermouth. (I think I remembered everything.) Then we made it over to a bakery owned by a Syrian transplant to Barcelona, where we had our choice of yummy pastry. Next was a wonderful shop that sold local hams and cheeses, and we were able to taste a variety of each. (And I bought some vacuum-wrapped cheese to bring home -- it caused quite a "fragrance" in my luggage for the next 10 days, but hey, it's worth it.) Believe it or not, we then went on to have some paella and Alex insisted that we scrape the pan clean. Most of these stops included a glass or 2 of wine. And finally, dessert -- churros with chocolate sauce at a street stand. We were blessed not only with a wonderful guide, but with a really good group of participants. Whew, this was a really outstanding tour led by a fun and knowledgeable guide. Thanks Alexandra!

This was a great tour. With our guide Valentina. This was my second tour with Devour, and both have been excellent. First of all, it was nice to be in a true Catalan neighborhood a bit away from the Gothic Quarter and the other crowded tourist areas. There is no way I would have known to choose any of these places by myself and I would not have known what to order. Valentina was very energetic, friendly, and passionate about the neighborhood and the food. She did a particularly nice job of making us all feel welcome and comfortable with each other. I highly recommend this tour!
