Itinerary

Day 1: Cape Town - Oudtshoorn

Stop At: Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, Gonna Kraal Road Little Brak River, Mossel Bay 6053 South Africa
Depart from Cape Town early morning (between about 6am to ± 8am - subject to your address) for the scenic journey to Oudtshoorn. Leave the silhouette of Table Mountain behind and trade it for the lush green scenery of the Garden Route.

The wildlife reserve is about 450 km (about 6 hours subject to rest stops in between) from Cape Town.

Once arrived, enjoy a 2,5 hour safari 4x4 safari game drive at Botlierskop private game reserve, the ranger points out wildlife as he searches for most of the Big Five animals (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino) in the 3500ha private game reserve – located in a malaria-free zone. It's home to an abundance of wildlife including giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, rare black impala and more than 200 bird species.

Just when you thought your bush experience couldn’t get any better, hop off the safari vehicle for a short ±20min tranquil bushwalk, following your game ranger as you track wildlife through the coastal renosterveldt and Cape fynbos.
Duration: 2 hours

Pass By: Buffelsdrift Game Lodge, Cango Caves Road, Oudtshoorn, 6620, South Africa
After a short ±1-hour journey you'll reach Oudtshoorn and Buffelsdrift Game Lodge - an unexpected oasis that wows from the first glimpse. In the heart of the Klein Karoo, luxe canvas tents are decked out with all the creature comforts including a beautiful claw-footed bath, rustic outdoor shower and the most inviting king-sized bed. Wooden balconies overlook the dam where hippos wallow languidly in the glassy water. On the horizon line, giraffes snack on the tops of tall trees as the sun dips below the horizon.  Take in the calm veld surrounds by lounging at the pool deck amongst giant aloe vera, framing your perfect view of birds and game that visit the water's edge at sunset.

No meals included on this day.
Accommodation included: Overnight in Oudtshoorn at 4-star Buffelsdrift Lodge Glamping Tents (you'll be informed if not available to move dates)

Day 2: Oudtshoorn - Cape Town

Stop At: Buffelsdrift Game Lodge - Activities, Cango Caves Road, Oudtshoorn 6620 South Africa
After breakfast, jump straight back into the thick of the Klein Karoo bush to find even more wildlife as you set out on another 4x4 safari  (1,5 hours) to search for buffalo, elephant, kudu, zebra, wildebeest - just to name a few. You could spot porcupine, caracals, meerkats, aardvark, honey badgers and foxes and the experience feels even more intimate in the open-air jeep. Rangers use their local knowledge to ensure you get the best out of the bush game drive; so don’t be surprised if they jump out of the jeep and pick up a tortoise or a lizard for the ultimate show and tell. This "bush drive safari" focuses more on getting back to basics and close to nature as the reserve is not home to many big game species.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Oudtshoorn, Oudtshoorn, Western Cape
Those seeking a meaningful nature experience can join rangers on an optional Elephant Bush Walk to have the opportunity to walk alongside three rescued elephants in their natural environment (own expense). Learn about these gentle giants, under the watchful eye of the elephant guides you’ll stroll with these impressive creatures – easily the largest land mammals on earth.
Duration: 40 minutes

Pass By: Oudtshoorn, Oudtshoorn, Western Cape

We just loved everything about this safari. Walking with the Elephants was the highlight. Our tour guide JP was fantastic very informative and accommodating we highly recommend this Tour. We stayed in the Glamping tents which were luxurious.

Really great 3 day trip, and would recommend if you want to get out of Cape Town and see some safari animals in the wild. Both game reserves have great facilities, food and great guides who are very knowledgeable on the gamedrives. The vehicles used are very open and so you can see all of the animals. We would highly recommend doing the optional elephant experience, as you get up close and personal with them, and have the ability for some great photos. We stayed at Buffelsdrift as part of the 4* accomodation offer, but others as part of our wider group (11 total, stayed in 3* or "backpackers" accomodation as part of a different offer/price point). Only downside is that the trip seemed more disorganised than it actually was with a lack of clarity/ full transparency from the overall guide on the trip. Note there is a lot of travel in a minibus for this (c4.5-5 hours), but that is what is required to actually get out to Oudtshoorn.

Overall the trip was amazing. Our guide Neval kept the trip interesting by filling us in on the history of South Africa, including what it was like in apartheid. There were two game drives, both equally fun. However, the one at Botlierskop was probably the better one, you could get up and close to rhinos, lions, and cheetahs (they were far from the road so we couldn’t go). The one in Buffelsdrift didnt include cheetahs or lions. PRO: Amazing trip, clamping option was great. Super fun. Guide was amazing, and you learn a lot about South Africa on the way there. CON: Schedule was super tight, so you feel rushed when you are eating. Also, the van that drove us around was really uncomfortable, imagine airplane economy class with uncomfortable cushions.

The tour is far away from Capetown but totally worth it. Our driver Moudy was wonderful and gave us a lot of information on the drive. The two safari drives were great, with extremely knowledgable guides and the glamping was fantastic, just like in the pictures. We would have liked to stay more time. Food was also very good. I recommend the ostricj steak.

It was a great trip and a great value in my opinion. We stayed in the Tent and it was the most romantic place we have ever stayed. 5 star accommodations in a tent. The restaurant was excellent as well. The Game drives were excellent way to safely see the Animals in natural habitat. I also enjoyed the fact that one was in a desert area and the other was in a mountainous region. Felt like I got to see two ecosystems on one trip. The big thing to understand is this is 300 miles from Capetown. So in two days you do a lot of driving in a van. There is no way around this, it’s simply location and they make it as enjoyable as possible but it is not for you if you do not like long car trips. Once there it is actually a little nicer than the photos portray!!
