Overview

Join Richard and Gillian, chefs who run their own restaurants, for a private 3-hour cooking lesson and a meal with wine in their lovely home. They will introduce you to South African home-cooking, local wines and will share their infectious love of their home country with you. You may learn how to make prawn and nectarine salad and how to braai delicious rump steak or cook chicken breasts in tomato sauce with a spinach and feta stuffing and a lemon meringue. You can expect your cooking class to last for 1-2 hours. Food is the center of this home, with large indoor and outdoor dining tables, a kitchen, and braai. Like most South Africans, cooking on the braai is the couple's favorite meal and social activity. Braai is cooking on a fire/barbequing which is very popular and a significant part of the culture in South Africa. Gillian and Richard have a fantastic outdoor braai where they often host.

Join Richard and Gillian in their kitchen for a cooking demonstration and learn how to make 2-3 South African dishes. You may learn how to make prawn and nectarine salad and how to braai delicious rump steak or cook chicken breasts in tomato sauce with a spinach and feta stuffing, or a lemon meringue for dessert. You can expect your cooking class to last for 1-2 hours before you sit down to eat.

Richard and Gillian are chefs and restaurant owners who believe in eating and treating your body well so they only use the best ingredients to prepare a meal. Richard is a home winemaker very knowledgeable about local wines. Food is the center of their home, with large indoor and outdoor dining tables, a kitchen, and braai. Like most South Africans, cooking on the braai is the couple's favorite meal and social activity.

There are multitudes of different foods that are traditional to South Africa’s diverse culture (predominately Cape Malay, Afrikaans, English, and African) from their Dutch, British, Indian and Malaysian influences. Your South African meal will include dishes from a variety of these traditions, including foods like bredie (stew), curry, roasts including lots of braai, plus salads and side dishes. Your meal will end with traditional desserts such as malva tart (sweet pudding), lemon meringue or koeksisters (a syrup-coated twisted or braided doughnut).

Please note: This is not a professional cooking class, rather an experience to visit an authentic, local home and meet a local family and share the culture and cuisine together. Richard and Gillian have a pet dog.

Fantastic evening with Rich and Gillian in their home (approximately a 25-minuted drive from the V&A Waterfront). They are both passionate about good food with the freshest ingredients. An excellent meal and conversation(s). The multi-course meal was paired with wine from their extensive cellar. They do contact guests in advance to see if there are any food issues/preferences/allergies.

We had a great time during our visit last week. Richard and Gillian were great hosts. The food was terrific and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommended. About 25 minutes from central Capetown but easy and cheap by taxi or uber.

Rather a leap in to the unknown but, golly, what a terrific experience.Certainly very much off the beaten track but our hosts were just lovely - gushing with informative discussion and local knowledge that one couldn't ever glean elsewhere. In short - really very good indeed. Oh yes, and the food was fantastic too!

Everything you hope you are going to get in this type of food experience: excellent food, lively conversation and a friendly home atmosphere! I highly recommend this tour as a refreshing change from restaurant eating which, much as you love it, does not have the unique circumstances if you are in the right home setting - this is the perfect place.
