Stop At: Africa Afrika Tours and Transfers, Cape Town Central South Africa

For nearly 400 years, Robben Island, about 12 kilometres from Cape Town, was a place of exile where rulers sent those they regarded as outcasts and troublemakers.

Robben Island was used at various times between the 17th and 20th centuries as a prison, a hospital for socially unacceptable groups and a military base. Its buildings, particularly those of the late 20th century such as the maximum security prison for political prisoners, witness the triumph of democracy and freedom over oppression and racism.

The author Lawrence Green described Robben Island as "The Island of Exiles". For centuries it was a remote inaccessible place. It was said that the Portuguese has put prisoners here in as early as 1525, but to date, no evidence has pointed to this occurrence.

Had to wait for two hours waiting my time was changed from 9 to 11 without notice. Showed up on town only to be told you have been moved from 9 to 11am.

the guide at the prison was exceptional but unfortunately the tour didn't have enough vehicles to ferry us to the venue maybe because of festive season

The destination was amazing. The local guides were warm, informative and inviting. The transport to and from the island was cool but I would NEVER recommend this visit. Once you land you have no information on the island or the tour, The guides are having a great time and sharing nothing. The buses are cramped with no air conditioning. You get the feeling of being exploited. When you finally leave the bus the genuine adventure starts with local guides and it is great. But you have to get back on the crowded bus with guides who are obnoxious and entitled. This is a trip you should avoid as a tourist. I would describe this trip as a nightmare.
