Overview

Swap sopranos for fire-breathing acrobats at the Sichuan Opera, a one-of-a-kind cultural performance at Chengdu’s Shufeng Yayun Teahouse. You’ll be glued to your seat for 1.5 hours as you watch acrobats, dancers, and puppets in acts that include a ‘face-changing’ mask spectacle. Depending on your preferences, you might upgrade for better seats and snacks to go with your included Sichuan tea. For the VIP treatment, opt for a Chinese massage, for an ear-grooming session, or to dress up in show costume with makeup for a photograph!

Visit: Shu Feng Ya Yun Sichuan Opera, Qintai Road, Chengdu 610072 China

Hail a taxi (own expense) and make your way to Shufeng Yayun Teahouse located in Chengdu Culture Park. All entrance tickets include Sichuan tea service at bamboo tables and chairs, and you can upgrade to add light snacks. If you’ve chosen VIP seating, enjoy a chair massage or get your ears cleaned (a traditional teahouse service) before the show, or take the opportunity dress up in an opera costume and makeup for a photo after the show. (See descriptions of each VIP option in Itinerary below.)

When it's time to take your seat, turn your attention to a lively 1.5-hour show that fuses acting, acrobatics, puppetry, folk music and dancing. The Sichuan Opera derives its subject matter from Chinese classical novels, legends and folk tales. Several distinct acts — Changing Faces, Spitting Fire and Rolling Light — feature dazzling sets and costumes that celebrate Southwestern China’s performing and fine arts.

During Changing Faces, perhaps the most popular routine, the actors quickly switch between different masks to portray characters’ personalities as the drama develops. Spitting Fire is a literal act that's distinctive of Sichuan Opera; it's also a performance that elicits oohs and ahhs from the crowd. Rolling Light involves a performer acting out a variety of routines like jumping over a bench or dancing with a fan, all the while balancing a bowl lit with fire on his head!

Other highlights include The Beauty of the World, a stick puppet show about a fairy infatuated with human life, and an act featuring shadow puppets that draws from an ancient folk art.

Hop on a taxi after the show to make your way back to your hotel.

Brilliant show. Well worth the money. VIP seats are best as close to the stage to see the mask changing act which was amazing

This was my second time seeing the Opera and it was a fantastic performance! My only complaint was that we booked the VIP experience and one of the options was to try on the costumes and have makeup done. Unfortunately it was never specified that this had to be done early before the show. By the time we arrived, it was no longer an option. So if you want to do the makeup and costume, be sure to arrive early!

There were numerous mini-shows packaged into the 90-minutes, including acrobatics, shadow play, traditional song and dance, comedy show and finally the mask changers. Very entertaining even for non-Chinese speakers.

Great little variety show with a flavour of Sichuan culture and talent. The atmosphere is relaxed and you are served tea on your own table (with endless refills). The only complaint would be the heat and no AC, but there is a bamboo fan provided (if you don't mind fanning your wrist to death). The host gives a small introduction to each act, including an English translation, which is thoughtful and helpful. Overall, there is much talent on display, and I would definitely recommend this experience.
