1.The British were the first to commercialize coffee in Sri Lanka, creating the country’s first, largely-successful export crop. Unfortunately, this led to the massive deforestation of Ceylon’s beautiful mountain forests with great biodiversity.

After being passed from the Dutch to the British Empire, the island, then called Ceylon, established a coffee industry that grew to be one of the world’s three biggest, competing with Brazil and Indonesia. By 1867, more than 160,000 acres of coffee were being cultivated in Sri expand coffee plantations. Coffee production in Sri Lanka was centered in the Kandyan provinces.Unfortunately, Sri Lanka endured an epidemic of coffee leaf fungus in the late nineteenth Lanka with exports of more than 67 million pounds.

Coffee was a major economic crop in Sri Lanka from 1830 to 1850 and was creating a more modernized economy. With the opening of the Ceylon Bank in 1841, financing was provided to century that destroyed plants and forced landowners to convert to tea. Within fifteen years, the coffee plant disease had destroyed most of the plantations and tea became the main crop of Sri Lanka.

The glorious cheese kottu. This clever invention brought kottu back into the limelight, with many a clubgoer and/or stoner patronising its milky, cheesy goodness. Typically, they add one or two cheese wedges and about half a bottle of kal kiri. The milk softens the rotti and helps spread the cheese all over everything, the onions, the veggies, the meat and whatever else you've asked to be put in it. Cheese kottus are mostly ordered with chicken, though you can get it with beef, too. It doesn't quite work with pork kottu, though, don't mess with pork kottu. Commons does a pretty fancy take on it with a creamy cheese sauce poured on top of a bed of kottu.

Chapati is a type of Indian flat bread, it’s very popular in Sri lanka. It is a staple and made of really simple ingredients: wheat flour, salt and water only . Most people who are unfamiliar with spices, a curry is basically something that’s fiery and spicy but this potato dish is anything but spicy and is a great testament to what Sri Lankan curries can offer.

Accompanied by a mild, creamy coconut-ty base that is bright yellow in colour; this dish uses spices like turmeric and fenugreek seeds which are believed to carry a ton of medicinal properties. This is a super comforting and non-spicy curry dish that everyone can enjoy and is perfect dish to introduce curries to toddlers and those who are weary of curries. I love my potato white curry to be paired with a bowl of steaming hot rice and a spoonful of Vegemite, but it can also be enjoyed with stringhoppers Chapati ,Puttu ,Bread .

Pittu is a traditional breakfast item of steamed rice flour mixed with scraped coconut and salt. Pittu is cooked in a pittu bambuwa, a cylindrical vessel which is made from bamboo and wounded with coir.

The pittu mixture of rice flour and coconut is thus placed inside this bamboo structure and steamed over a vessel filled with water.
If you are a seafood lover and love eating spicy dishes, then you should definitely try Sri Lankan Crab Curry. This Asian recipe is prepared using crab meat, shallots and milk, and goes well with steamed rice/pulao traditionally. However, you can also enjoy this curry recipe with Pittu .

Rio Ice Cream (Wellawatte)
Rio Ice Cream, a Jaffna franchise that's about forty years old (according to Raja at its Wellawatte branch), is idyllic and affordable for ice cream lovers - they're creative with flavours and mix it up for fun with jelly and smarties, because why not?

Really had real blueberries... HOLY MOTHER OF ICE CREAMS THIS IS TRICKING MY BRAIN BECAUSE IT'S SWEET VANILLA WITH A SLIGHT BLUEBERRY FLAVOR AND LOTS OF LIGHT VIOLET COLOURING... but this is pretty darn good," and you end up downing it like beer.

Lovely guide who listened in to our needs, stopped for photo ops and took us both to local hang outs and to a tea tasting where we could do some shopping.

We had a lovely evening tour. We both got to taste local delicacies and have a tea tasting. Our driver was very good at listening in to our needs and we got to do photo stops in different areas and photographs temples and mosques.

This was a really wonderful way to sample authentic Sri Lankan food in Colombo! My guide, Ravi, was very knowledgable about Sri Lankan cuisine and provided a lot of insight into the culture and political situation as well, which I really enjoyed. You will eat A LOT in this tour, so come hungry!!

The Tour was great. Maran is a super nice guy who is not just knowing the good places for good and great street food (definatly worth it), he is also a hell of a tuktuk driver. After one month in Sri Lanka and driving a tuktuk by myself, never had such a great ride in the thickest traffic in Colombo you could imagine. The open rooftop where you can stand up and enjoy the madness from above, is an experience for itself. Thank you and also for the good conversations.

Want to start this review by thanking Maran. He really made this tour even more enjoyable. Polite, a good laugh and has great knowledge of the city of Colombo and Sri Lanka in general. After booking through TA you are contacted via whatsapp and picked up at your hotel. Maran provided us with a Sri Lankan coconut, cold sealed water, tissues and sanitzer from his tuk tuk. You are driven around many different areas in the City spending time trying lots of local dishes including street vendors, hoppers, kottu, rotti, fruit juice, coffee and tea. Some advice would be to try ask for small portions and you wont need to eat before hand. The tour is worth every penny, I would recommend this tuk tuk food tour as you can cover more ground than a walking one and you are taken in to areas you perhaps wouldn’t go to otherwise. You get more interaction than i expected, especially the coffee and tea tasting places. It’s 4-5 hours in total so it’s a full afternoon/evening out. Really glad we did this particular tour. And again a special mention for Maran and his convertible tuk tuk. Stutti Maran Machan.
