Overview

Located in the heart of Florence, the Accademia Gallery hosts examples of paintings and sculptures by the great 14th and 15th century masters who made Florence the capital of art. The most famous work exhibited is the marble statue of David made by Michelangelo.

Visit: Galleria dell'Accademia, Via Ricasoli, 58/60, 50122, Florence Italy

Founded in 1784 upon Grand Duke Leopoldo of Lorena's decree, La Galleria dell'Accademia was created to host a collection of antique and modern paintings and sculptures so the students of the nearby Accademia di Belle Arti could pursue their studies in the light of these great masterworks. The Accademia Gallery is situated in parts of the former convent San Niccolò in Cafaggio and the hospice of San Matteo.

The Accademia Gallery visit begins with the Sala dell'Anticolosso, where the gesso original of The Rape of the Sabines (1582) by Giambologna is placed. Some paintings such as Christ of Pity by Andrea del Sarto and the Deposition of the Cross by Filippo Lippi can be seen here. From here you reach the Galleria dei Prigioni, a corridor that hosts a series of incomplete sculptures by Michelangelo.

At the end of the gallery reigns supreme Michelangelo's David.

2* not the for the Accademia but for La Vacanza Travel. I had booked 1:30 (no guide) but the tickets came through with 16:45. We had to get a train back to Rome so this was too late. Contacted La Vacanza Travel who couldn’t (or wouldn’t) change the time saying the local tour operator had said the time allocated could not be amended. I asked for a refund and this was also refused. In the end we went to the Accademia and explained the situation to one of the employees who very kindly let us in so we could get our train. Apparently this happens all the time! So perhaps not the fault of the local operator? This was an unguided tour which is probably why the allotted time was over 3 hours past the time booked, I doubt a guided tour would have had such a big time difference. You go for one reason which is stunning. It takes less time to go round and you don’t need a guide, but be wary when booking about the times!

If I could give it a zero I would. Vivitor is a third-party vendor that works with local agency for tickets, one of those two businesses changed my confirmed ticket time appointment to a later time in which I could not participate. I called Vivitor and the agent was kind and tried to assist me with a refund or a credit, but in the end, I am left with $62 short. I wish Vivator would Have a better system when circumstances are not the customers’ fault. I don’t think I will ever use Vivator to buy tickets again in my life.

While the museum itself was worth the tour purchasing tickets through this 3rd party (weekend/La Vacanza Travel) was not favorable. We were sent multiple emails saying void the last tickets sent and use these. The last tickets sent only included 2 separate tickets for 3 people total and we had 5 in our group. We explained to the museum and they worked it out but it was a mess. In the future we will do as we have with Get Your Guide and use the app. SO much easier and accurate.

The company sent us our 'tickets' the day before our visit, complete with code for scanning. At the Academia Gallery, we were denied entry with these scans ! Come to find out the tour company had 'contacted' me overnight that they could not secure tickets even after I already booked them over three months in advance. Stay away! Was promised a refund but had to contact my bank to get my money back.

We booked our tickets for the Accademia in May for our one day in Florence on October 4th. The day before our reservation we received an email canceling our reservation due to "great demand for the date". Although we received a refund for our tickets, we were very disappointed as our visit had been confirmed at the time we purchased the tickets.
