Itinerary

Stop At: Wiesenhüttenplatz, Wiesenhüttenpl., 60329 Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Leave Frankfurt by van or coach to Castle Eltz

Duration: 1 minute

Stop At: Eltz Castle, Burg Eltz 1, 56294 Wierschem, Rhineland-Palatinate Germany

Leave central Frankfurt and travel by coach to the hills of Moselle River, just north of Koblenz. Your destination is Eltz Castle, a glorious medieval fortress nestled deep in the woodland atop a 230-foot (70-meter) cliff. Rising out of the forest like a fairytale palace, the castle towers over the Elzbach Valley below, and its views are said to be some of the most spectacular in Germany.

After traveling for roughly 1.5 hours, hop off your coach and head inside the castle, seeing its key sites on a walking tour. Having been left intact for some 700 years, Eltz Castle remains furnished pretty much as it always had been, so its interior is a delight to see. Admire the living and sleeping rooms, and then walk through the lavish armory room, where nearly 500 pieces of jewelry and ceremonial weapons are displayed.

Wander through the hunting room, adorned with bear rugs, and hear tales of the servants who once worked in the castle while exploring the kitchens. Learn about the Eltz family who ordered the castle to be built in the 12th century, and hear how the different branches of the family built their own towers within the castle over the following 400 years.

Return to your coach and travel back toward Frankfurt, crossing the Rhine River. Stop at a riverside restaurant and sit down to enjoy a dinner featuring local delicacies and wine (drinks at own expense). Savor the meal while watching the sun go down over the Rhine, and then head back to your coach for the return trip to Frankfurt.

We had a wonderful day touring the Eltz Castle and a fantastic dinner afterwards. Peter was a very informative driver and guide. I would absolutely recommend this trip and wouldn't hesitate to take it again.

The tour was great! The crazy gluten ladies in the back row, now that’s a different story. The tour started promptly on time at the designated pick up location and time. It was about a 2 hour drive from Frankfurt to the castle. We did have to stop by the office to pick up money for the tour as another reviewer suggested, however it was 1 street over and it was a detour of no more than 3-4 minutes. The guide explained that he had taken the tour van home the night before due to being stuck in traffic in/around Heidelberg for 2 hours the night before. This slight detour did not impact the amount of time spent at the castle or any thing else for that matter. What did impact the tour was the group of 3 ladies in the back seat complaining and gossiping the entire 2 hour ride while speaking at an uncomfortably high volume. The tour guide had to repeat questions 4-5 times and would practically raise his voice to yelling so the women in the back row would stop speaking so loudly. It got to the point that if he was asking questions, regarding dinner or the castle, that he had to resort to banging on the steering wheel or arm rests to get their attention. It was beyond disrespectful to everyone else on the tour the way they conducted themselves. It makes American tourists look bad, and people wonder why Americans have such a poor reputation in Europe. As for the castle, the guide explained that prior to the usage of the Euro as currency that this castle was featured on the $500 currency note for Germany. It completely lived up to that hype. Between the old armor on the walls, the original paintings and furnishings within the castle, and the sheer beauty surrounding the grounds it was truly a sight to behold. I would happily visit the castle again as there were so many areas that I would love the explore further including trails and the overall castle grounds. As for for the drive back, the guide took us via a detour down the river Moselle and into downtown Koblenz. He told us about the history of the 700 year old fortress on the hill, at least what we could hear between the ladies in the back row gossiping at a higher than normal volume. We then able to drive down the Rhine River from Koblenz to the restaurant situated on the river. We had previously done the river cruise the day before, which was fantastic, and got to see more castles (which is always a plus in my book). However, all we heard during the drive was the complaining from the ladies in the back row that they had missed this castle and that castle and the history of each as they were too busy speaking to each other to listen to what the guide had to say. Dinner is where the group of 3 crazy ladies really decided to show out. The guide had explained that the only gluten free option was the vegetarian plate, which the group argued that could not be correct. They then proceeded to shove food back at the server complaining that she didn’t understand anything because she didn’t speak English well. The whole interaction between the group and the waitress and the tour staff was down right embarrassing to watch knowing that the main problem lady comes from America. To top this all off, one of the ladies was near fluent in Germany, but refused to speak it to the waitress in an attempt to resolve their problems. The only complaint that I have is that I wish I would have been able to book the tour as a private tour so I would not have to deal with amazingly selfish and disrespectful people such as that. It was truly amazing people can feel such entitlement in a country with a different culture and a language barrier.

The castle itself was splendid and has a collection of elements inside that are spectacular both in history and variety. The grounds and care of them are outstanding. If you like hiking they have trails that have awe inspiring views of the valley. This I would rate 5 star. As far as the tour guide, and the level of service I would rate this group poorly. Guide started the trip with us stopping at his office, with a van load of 8 people waiting on him. We then drove to the castle. Guide was condescending trying to be a jokester. And when taking our orders for the dinner later was insistent that vegetarian was the same as gluten free which we’d clarified for him in the car on route to the castle. The biggest failure was the dinner. The restaurant itself that they take you to is called the Anker, located on the Reine was very garish and dirty. One of our group needed a gluten free meal. This establishment has no clue what that meant. Kept trying and insisting that guest to try and eat the prepared vegetarian dish. Which held unsuitable foods that were definitively not gluten free. This all became very frustrating and awkward for the guest. They actually came out of the kitchen and stated that the chef did no know what gluten free was. To be a chef and a tour guide and not understand severe food allergies is reprehensible. Taking lightly that someone can get very ill is shameful. Then to top it off, some of the tour group wanted to get dessert and the driver said he was worried about getting a ticket and that we needed to leave. I rated 2 stars. The castle experience was worthy of 5 stars and in this case gets the 2. The tour group itself should get 0 stars.

Terrible…. The tour guide was the only plus, too expensive of a trip that was not worth the money… specially when it came to the food the “gave” us, only a couple of choices at a restaurant of their choice and was terrible food!!! Don’t waste your money!!!!

I'm sorely disappointed in this tour. To start the bus that took the 4 of us there was comfortable BUT it definitely hasn't been cleaned in a while. There were crumbs of food on the back seat where I sat. There was used napkins in the cup holders. It should have been cleaned after each tour. The tour guide. He was nice BUT definitely wasn't a tour guide. He was just a driver. There was no commentary at all during the drive up to Eltz Castle. The restaurant. It's definitely quirky BUT the food is sub par. 3 of us on the tour ordered the sausage and one ordered schnitzel. The schnitzel looked appetizing and was a good portion. Now....the sausage. The sausage meal was weird. The sausage itself was good and warm. The Sauerkraut was like Cole slaw...which was fine. The potatoes looked like scalloped potatoes BUT it was cold. The surprise on our faces when we took a bite and noticed the potatoes was cold. The meal was not what was expected at all. For the price I paid (387 CAD) - I would have expected a warm meal and a 5 star meal. The tour at the castle that handled by the staff at the castle was lacking as well. I highly recommend that you don't book this tour for the price being offered. Of it was offered for 200 CAD less than what it is I'd say go for it but for this price, definitely not.
