Bruce, our guide, was wonderful. My 18 year old nephew and I (52, M) loved seeing the castles, lunch next to the Planzee, and the Alpine Louge, followed by a stop for eis (ice cream) in Oberammergau. Bruce showed us all the best photo spots and angles (important to an 18 year old for Instagram reasons) and entertained us with stories about King Ludwig that you don't hear on the official tour. It was an unforgettable day!

Frist, a private tour is absolutely the right way to go and this particular tour was awesome. We recommend it to everyone. The Zugspitze was not available, so we visited two castles, had lunch at a local brewery (bought lots of home made spirits), and traveled a bit into Austria for dessert by an alpine lake. We learned so much from our native English speaker who was a long-time resident of Munich. We saw countryside that was incredible and we visited a couple of local (not tourist) spots that were absolutely delightful. No comparison to being bussed to tourist spots. Buses could not go on the roads we traveled. Plus we got the 'real' experience of the autobahn with the safety of a pro driver. Do this! Here are a few notes: None of the advertised tours include tickets to see inside the castle and they all drop people at the same spot pretty far away. Tickets to see inside sell out. BE SURE TO BUY TICKETS for the castle tour itself ahead of time. Coordinate the time with the tour operator ahead of time, but the earlier in the day, the better. Do not miss going inside! It is physically taxing, but well worth it. Dress lightly and take cool water with you. The view from the balcony alone is worth the effort. If you are not in shape, allow plenty of time to arrive before your ticketed tour time, including buying a bus or carriage ride up to the castle from the tour drop off point. Get a carriage ride down, too. Even so, there is a lot of walking and many many stairs. STILL WORHT IT! Tour times are NOT flexible. They are automated and rigid and require you to have your tickets physically printed or the bar code available on your iphone. The second castle, Hohenschwangau Castle, which was actually used by royalty, was a great comparison to Neuschwanstein, so you need to see inside both. These buildings are musty, so if you have asthma or severe dust/mold allergies, be sure to have your inhaler. Still worth it! I am so glad these castles are being preserved. This is truly a time portal to a different time and a completely different level of privilege. These are also a great counterpoint to the Nymphenburg palace complex. However, the best part of this trip is the area itself. We could have spent days wondering, hiking, biking, eating and drinking in this incredible countryside. We loved all the historic aspects of our trip, but we could have just relaxed here for several days. This is a fantastic tour, but you may want to spend more than 1 day in this area.
