Overview

The Monumental Ensemble of the Fortress of La Mota, houses the old walled city of Alcalá la Real. This, and the different elements of military architecture of its environment, serve as reference point to know and explain the temporal and spatial process linked to the evolution of the border during the Late Middle Ages, while serving as an example of urban development in the interior of a city intramuros in the period that covers from S. XIV to s. XVIII.

We are open Monday to Sunday.

Visit: Castillo-Fortaleza de la Mota, 23680 Alcala la Real Spain

Currently, the Monumental Ensemble of the Fortress of La Mota, has become a monumental space of the first order, a first-class reference at the tourist and heritage level. Along with the singularity of the enclave, the thematization project was developed, which has led to the creation of the Center for the Interpretation of Life on the Border.

With the incorporation of these improvements and new equipment, it has become an effective offer that integrates leisure, culture, learning and fun, all with the appropriate historical rigor, turning this enclave and its visit into a leap to times of frontier, of struggles, but also of coexistence and exchange between cultures. All this with the use of the most modern technologies, audiovisuals, models, 3D elements, which make the visit even more attractive.

However, the extraordinary Monumental Complex of the Fortress of La Mota, together with the beauty of its natural environment, constitute an incomparable framework for the presentation of the values of the cultural and landscape heritage of one of the most attractive areas of Andalusia.

We visited from the UK, and were told that Fortaleza de la Mota was worth a visit as it had "a few holes in the ground where bodies had been". Astonishing understatement. The citadel occupies a strategically imposing location looming over the otherwise sleep town of Alcalá la Real. Difficult to approach by car (some really steep and narrow medieval streets if you go the wrong way), and an unaccountably empty car park when we got there (was it closed for the day, we wondered?) We managed to find the casually signpostedticket office, and bought tickets, together with the obligatory mobile commentary, and puffed our way up the access ramp which winds round outside of the fort, before spilling us out onto... a hilltop city. I'm afraid I rapidly abandoned the plodding English commentary in favour of the fairly plentiful English boards explaining each part of the site. I found the whole place enchanting. It was clear considerable scholarly effort (and money) was going into the careful restoration of most of the whole site. We were told later that the money to do this was coming from central and local government, as well as EC grants. What was most surprising was how few people visited while we were there (weekday in early October). The ticket man told us that he had sold 80 tickets that day - 80! - which was probably as many as they sell to the Alhambra Palace just down the road. If you use your imagination with hardly anyone else around, I think it's a lot easier to imagine the place in its heyday. We came away gobsmacked, with the site itself, but also astonished that the place isn't packed. Do yourself a favour - if you like your history and archaeology low key and sensitively presented, make a detour to Alcalá la Real. You won't regret it!

We were encouraged to visit Alcalá by our hotel owners. It is truly a remarkable place, visible from way off, in a spectacular location. I won't go into details, but the manner in which it has been restored is very sympathetic, and it has one huge advantage over other fortresses is that the walls etc of the mediaeval settlement are still there, so it is possible to see where the rest of society in the fortress lived. Very worth a visit.

Huge fortress on top of a steep hill overlooking plains of Andalusia. Convenient location not far from major highways, allows for a nice side trip. Well maintained (restorations were ongoing while we visited). Every interesting feature is well described (audio guide was complimentary with entrance ticket). There are some hidden places, in order to access small investigating skills were required. Great views from the top of the towers. All in all, great place to visit while traveling around south west Spain.
