This monument of Independence was inaugurated in 1910 for the celebrations of the dictator Porfirio Díaz who came to visit from Mexico City. It is a replica of the Angel of Independence of the capital.

Formerly this property was part of the royalist Palace of the Spanish captain Cristobal de Oñate in 1542, after being abandoned for decades it was transformed into the Arena Coliseo in 1959. Today it is known as the cathedral of wrestling in Guadalajara.

Founded in 1543, it is older than the Guadalajara Cathedral. Its style is mixed since it has Baroque and Renaissance details in the mere Roman style.

In the viceregal era, the street market was located here to exchange products, and conflicts and criminal cases were also resolved by the royal court.

In this garden is the traditional kiosk in the center of the square. Opposite is the old hermitage of San Sebastian, today the temple of San Sebastian Martir was built in the 17th century.
Also here you can find the monument of the wake against oblivion dedicated to the explosions in the neighborhood on April 22, 1992.
