Overview

Lantau Island is often referred to as the ‘Lungs of Hong Kong’ because it is so green and underdeveloped.

Take a full day private walking tour of Lantau with your personal tour guide and visit the awe inspiring Big Buddha and the wonderfully quaint stilt village of Tai O. Your tour includes a ride on the Ngong Ping cable car to the Big Buddha and a ride in a boat at Tai O. Tours last 7 to 8 hours.

Available in English, Spanish, French, Dutch and Cantonese & Mandarin Chinese. All guides are native speakers.

Highlights

  • Enjoy a day away from the hustle and bustle of the city
  • Informative, friendly and professional guide
  • Private tour is operated with just your party and a guide/driver
  • Instant Confirmation

Your Lantau tour lasts 7 hours if you meet your guide at Tung Chung MTR station on Lantau Island or 8 hours if you would like your guide to meet you at your hotel.

On weekdays, your tour guide will meet at Tung Chung MTR station at 9:45am (or in your hotel lobby at 9am). On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, your tour guide will meet you at Tung Chung at 8:45am (or in your hotel lobby at 8am). This tour will start early to avoid the crowds.

Your Lantau private tour starts with a ride on the Ngong Ping Cable Car. You will be treated to the most wonderful views of Lantau Country Park and the airport as you travel over the back of the island for 25 minutes. Your destination is the famous Big Buddha. Here you will learn about Buddhism, climb the 268 steps to the Buddha, visit the Po Lin Monastery and the new hall of 10,000 Buddhas.

From Ngong Ping, it is a 15-minute bus ride to Tai O, the Venice of Hong Kong. Tai O is one of the very few remaining places in Hong Kong where you can still see stilt houses over the water. Tai O used to be a fairly big community but due to the decline of the fishing industry it, like Venice, is now primarily a tourist destination, for both overseas visitors and Hong Kongers escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. Tai O is still known for its traditional production of shrimp sauce and shrimp paste and for its colourful seafood market.

You will embark on a full exploration of Tai O visiting the beautifully restored Old Police Station, now operating as a heritage hotel. If you are feeling hungry, this is where you can enjoy lunch in the very nice Lookout restaurant. You will visit one of the two remaining shrimp sauce production factories, meander the back streets in and around the stilt houses, visit a temple from the late 1400’s and learn about the religion of Taoism. If you have the energy, you can trek to a lookout point where you can get an excellent view of the brand new 42km bridge between Hong Kong and Macau. Will will take a 20 minute boat ride through the stilt village and out into the harbour where, if you are lucky, you will see some of the renowned pink dolphins of Hong Kong!

Inclusions
  • Professional guide
  • One way ride on the Ngong Ping cable car from Tung Chung to the Big Buddha in a standard cabin (upgrade to crystal cabin available on request).
  • Public bus ride from Ngong Ping to Tai O and public bus ride from Tai O to Tung Chung or Mui Wo at the end of the tour
  • Speedboat ride at Tai O fishing village

Exclusions
  • Food and drinks, unless specified
  • Gratuities (optional)
  • If you elect to use a taxi at any point during your tour, the costs are not included and are payable by yourself.
  • Please note that if you book a hotel pick-up, it is still a walking tour, not a car tour which means that you will be travelling around using the excellent public transport system.
  • Confirmation will be received at time of booking
  • Adult pricing applies to all travelers
  • Children aged 2 or under join for free
  • This tour requires you to be physically fit. You will be walking between 5 and 10km over the course of the day. How far you walk will depend on how much walking you want to do at Tai O. You will be going at a slow pace, across flat land but you do need to be in reasonable health. If you wish to visit the Big Buddha up close you will need to be able to climb up 268 steps!
  • Occasionally the cable car is closed for maintenance. If it is closed on the day that you would like to tour, your tour guide will refund you the price of the cable car tickets and you will use the bus instead.
  • Please also inform us if you are travelling with children under 12 years of age.
  • Tours will be conducted in English unless requested otherwise at the time of booking.
  • Tours are available in French, Spanish, Dutch, Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese.

My friends and I LOVED Ryan. He was absolutely amazing and showed us everything we wanted to see. He went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, knew where we were and even made sure we got home. You can tell he genuinely cared about us and was passionate about the places we were seeing. We would highly recommend him and this tour. :)

Mel was our guide for this trip and was probably the best tour guide we've encountered! He was well prepared, professional, and catered the tour to our group's needs. He shared interesting information in a way that kept everyone in our multi-generational group engaged. He even had hand-held fans for our group to stay cool in the heat.
Throughout the day, he took photos of our group and then emailed them to us the next morning. He sent a trip recap including personalized information that he thought would be interesting to specific members of our group - for example, directions to buildings we'd asked about and recommendations for food near our hotel. Side note - we tried a couple of Mel's restaurant recommendations and they were AMAZING!
Thanks, Mel, for a fantastic day!

This is a great contrast to the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. Amy is a fantastic guide who provides a unique and local perspective of Lantau island.

Our tour with our Guide Richard Dias was one of the highlights of our trip to Hong Kong. It was well done and Richard added so much to make the trip memorable. His knowledge and execution of all the facts was first class. We were picked up at our hotel and brought back which made the day very easy and we did not have to do a thing, Richard took care of the whole day. I recommend this to any one going to Hong Kong to get a idea of life outside the big city. I would highly recommend Richard Dias for a guide.
