Overview

Set sail with the Hong Kong DolphinWatch team on this wonderful adventure to find the “pinkies”, the Chinese pink dolphins which are native in Hong Kong waters. The dolphins are located in North Lantau, where the South China Sea and Pearl river merge, making ideal feeding conditions for the small pod we have remaining. Due the large-scale development including the Hong Kong International Airport and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge over the last thirty years, plus continued water contamination, the numbers of these beautiful creatures have been steadily decreasing. This experience is also of ecological importance, because along with sharing our love for these magnificent creatures and raising awareness to their situation, the trip supports the ongoing surveillance and conditions to report back to local researchers, in the hope that we can continue to protect their habitat.

This tour is amazing!! This is such a unique experience that takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and exposes you to these majestic animals that are unfortunately getting smaller and smaller in number. There are two options for pickup: in Kowloon near the Peninsula Hotel, or meeting directly at the Tung Chung pier (which is close to the airport). On your way back, you can also choose to leave the group at the Tung Chung pier, get dropped off at the Tung Chung metro, or get a ride all the way back to Kowloon. We were also a little unsure what the "boat" would be like, but it ended up being more of a yacht --very spacious, covered, and with easy 360 degree viewing. I also get seasick, but the waters in the area where the boat sails are quite calm and with few waves. They quote a 95% success rate on being able to see dolphins, which I believe --the crew seemed quite experienced at spotting and knew all the places where the pods tend to hang out. The captain kept a respectable distance from the dolphins and allowed them to approach us on their own terms, which several of them did! We saw probably seven unique dolphins and they were clearly comfortable and allowed us to be in close proximity to them, but didn't exhibit any problematic behaviors like asking for food, performing on command, etc. We also saw what seemed to be a university-affiliated marine biologist performing research on the vessel, which we thought was really neat. Overall just felt like this company is very committed to their mission of spreading awareness of these beautiful animals. This tour is a great way to support them at a very reasonable price, while also getting a high quality, unique, and exciting experience.

A highly organised trip by a reputable and ethical company. Bennie and her team were very friendly and knowledgeable about the dolphins, and when we didn't see any dolphins on our first trip they offered us a discount to do another trip. On our second trip, we saw at least 5 dolphins - a grey baby, some speckled adolescents and pink adults. They were spectacular to watch and it felt like a real privilege to have seen them, particularly given the challenging environment in which they have to live and survive. On the return journey on the bus, they kindly stopped for us at Tung Chung station so we could spend the rest of the day at the Citygate outlet and Big Buddha. After the trip, Bennie also emailed to share the Facebook link to the photos that their professional photographer had captured (which were way better than the ones we took on our phones)! Overall a really positive experience and I would highly recommend it!

This was a really wonderful way to experience the waters around Hong Kong. We learned a lot and got to see a lot of pink dolphins! Well worth the trip and would certainly recommend it to folks looking for a half day trip of something to do in Hong Kong.

A fantastic morning dolphin watching. Very informative and, although there is no guarantee that we would see dolphins (they are after all wild), we saw many dolphins of different ages. A truly wonderful trip in support of a great cause. Well organised and everyone very friendly. Remember to dress for the weather!

Amazing tour - we learned a lot about the dolphins from the spotters and guides- I really hope the local government realizes what a treasure they are and will help protect them. The first half of our tour was all scenery and no dolphins, but the second half of our tour was all dolphins - maybe 16? Also, there was an onboard volunteer photographer whose photos we were able to access on Facebook. We got to see dolphins far and close, some playing and leaping out of the water, mothers and calves, grey and pink/white. It felt very special that we got to spend some time with them, and my kid liked it though she was a bit sea sick. It might be good to provide some snacks (like crackers) for those who feel a little nauseous. Also, if possible, maybe the tour could invest in a large water container to refill people's water bottles instead of handing out any plastic water bottles.
