Overview

This private food tour of Hong Kong with a private guide includes five foodie stops where you'll sample authentic Cantonese cuisine. Taste dim sum, wonton noodle soup, traditionally roasted meat, milk tea, and an egg tart, all eaten at local restaurants. Learn about the city's mix of British and Chinese heritage, from Guangzhou influences to Western favorites.

Meet your private guide in the morning in the Sheung Wan district of Hong Kong Island and follow on foot to a nearby restaurant. Arrive hungry, as you'll start the day with a traditional dim sum (yum cha) breakfast in a decades-old teahouse with a lively atmosphere. Find yourself transported back to a bygone era as you sample authentic dumplings still served via trolley.

Your next stop is a family-run wonton noodle shop, established in the 1960s and recommended by the Michelin Guide. Bite into this local specialty, a dish that only a true master can perfect. Then it's time for a cup of milk tea, perhaps the most pervasive legacy of Hong Kong's former British rule.

Next, travel aboard the Ding Ding (the Hong Kong tramway; own expense) to another family-run restaurant, which dates back to the pre-20th century Qing Dynasty and is renowned for its char siu. You're served a mixture of roasted meats, cooked in the traditional style and served with rice and homemade sauces.

Finish at a well-established bakery, a personal favorite of a former Hong Kong governor. Sink your teeth into an egg tart, or dan tat in Cantonese, another Chinese version of an English pastry — the custard tart.

In between visits to these eateries in Sheung Wan, Central, and Wan Chai, stop by a dried seafood shop for a look at ingredients traditionally used in soups, a Chinese medicine shop originating from 1940s, and Hong Kong’s oldest wet market. At the end of your food tour, your guide will explain how to get back to your hotel or give recommendations and directions to another point of interest.

Our recent private food tour in Hong Kong with the fantastic guide Ivy was extraordinary! Ivy, a true local with extensive knowledge of Hong Kong's food scene, took us on an enlightening and incredibly delicious gastronomic journey. She effortlessly navigated the bustling streets, leading us (a couple) to hidden gems and authentic eateries that we would never have discovered on our own. Ivy's insights into each dish's history and cultural significance added an extra layer of depth to the experience. Evidently, she took pride in sharing her heritage, weaving stories that made the food come alive. As we savored each bite, Ivy's anecdotes enhanced our understanding and appreciation of Hong Kong's rich culinary heritage. Beyond her expertise, Ivy's infectious enthusiasm and genuine love for her city made the tour an absolute joy. My favorite part was the dim sum for breakfast. The good and atmosphere were great. Mel was the best tour guide of all time. He knew so much, his English was really good. He is probably your best tour guide so test him well

We have just returned from a holiday to Hong Kong and one of the highlights of the trip was our food tour with Mel. Mel was a wonderful guide: he is engaging, professional and knowledgeable, and he made the tour very entertaining and interesting for our 7 year old and 11 year old daughters. Despite having lived in Hong Kong previously, we saw a side of the local food culture with Mel that we had never experienced before. After touring some local dried seafood and local medicine shops (our brief to Mel was "the more unusual the better"), we stopped at a tea shop where we enjoyed a traditional tea ceremony. We then moved on to a barbecue meat restaurant to try an assortment barbecue meats, noodles, rice and local drinks. Mel then found a couple of stores specialising in desserts requested by our daughters: egg waffles and egg tarts - both were delicious! We walked through a traditional wet market showcasing very fresh produce and ended at a Michelin-rated dim sum restaurant which served wonderful dumplings and another dish that our girls wanted to try, chicken feet. All in all, this food tour was a thoroughly enjoyable way to experience a more authentic Hong Kong. We would highly recommend Mel and the tour to anyone!
