Pass By: Museum-Icebreaker Angara, Marshala Zhukova St., 36a, Irkutsk 664050 Russia

The Angara is the oldest steam-powered icebreaker preserved on the planet. Built in 1897 by Sir W.G. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

After a long wait in different places, the Angara was finally towed to Irkutsk, Russia and completely restored in the early 1990s.

Now the vessel has been turned into a museum dedicated to development of private and state shipping on Lake Baikal, as well as the history of the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Due to the Angara and another English icebreaker named “Baikal”, there was arranged quite an efficient transportation between two shores of the lake while the railway was being laid. During the years of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), the Baikal icebreakers played an important role in the transfer of a large number of troops from the west to the east, thereby improving the conditions for the surrender of the Russian Empire when signing the treaty of Portsmouth in the United States of America.

In an hour, we will be on the shore of the deepest and largest by volume lake on Earth. The first thing we are going to do there is to wet our hands and say "Hello" to the lake. Also, according to an old Buryat tradition, we need to welcome local spirits by a special ritual. After that, we will get on board and head to the "golden buckle of the Trans Siberian Railway", the Circum Baikal Railway. The way to the road lies through the waters of Lake Baikal and the source of the Angara. According to different Buryat beliefs, this place is mysteryous and should be treated properly.
