Overview

Whale Watch is located in the small coastal town of Kaikōura on the East Coast of New Zealand’s South Island a scenic two and a half-hour drive north from Christchurch and two hour drive south from Picton. Kaikōura is a special place of lush pastures and towering, snow covered peaks that fall to the sea. This rare magic continues just offshore where a deep undersea canyon combines with unusual sea currents to attract an extraordinary abundance of marine life, the most famous being the Giant Sperm Whale.

Whale Watch is New Zealand's only vessel-based whale watching company offering visitors an exciting up-close encounter with the world’s largest toothed predator the Giant Sperm Whale in their natural environment at all times of the year. Whale Watch scheduled tours operate daily. Our 95% success rate means we guarantee an 80% refund if your tour does not see a whale. Whale Watch tours are extremely popular so we recommend booking early.

Itinerary

Few places on Earth possess the magic of Kaikōura. Many who visit leave transformed. It is a special part of New Zealand, imbued with powerful natural energy. A place where tectonic plates collide, towering peaks fall to the sea and ocean currents converge.

Such rare combinations lure an abundance of marine wildlife, the most famous being the Giant Sperm Whale. It was a whale that led the Māori ancestor Paikea to New Zealand many centuries ago. His descendants live in Kaikōura today. Fittingly, the whale continues to guide the people of Kaikōura and the visitors they host.

Kaikōura is one of New Zealand's leading eco-tourism destinations offering a variety of exciting activities and experiences. Despite the recent rise in tourist numbers, the town retains much of its historical charm. Many new motels, cafes and restaurants can be found in beautifully restored old buildings. Fresh local seafood is always on the menu. The retention of the town's distinctive character has made Kaikōura extremely attractive to artists. Their work, inspired by the remarkable landscape and wildlife, can be seen all over town.

Crew and staff are awesome- they are friendly and work hard to manage the large volumes of guests and provide an enjoyable and informative experience. The huge success of this tour means now you are on a very large and fast vessel with 2 bus-loads of other guests, so when the whale is sighted there is a bit of a crowd at the rails and having to steer your kids in between the surges of visitors. This leads to the ‘con’ side of the tour for families. To us the sperm whale looked like a giant log on the surface, there’s no breaching or pec slaps only the breathing and then the tail raise as it dives. So smaller eyes found this was not that interesting, they were looking at the helicopter and light plane overhead, but later in the same tour when we go inshore to the dolphins then the excitement kicked in. The pods included the Dusky and the Hector with round dark fin, fantastic to see in the wild so close to shore. This was the highlight for us. As an alternate I would suggest you checkout the Dolphin Encounter - it costs a bit more, but you get to swim with the animals (or stay on the boat), more interesting for kids. Or kayaking / other encounters. Another small thing is this tour is about the sperm whale but the WWK also features a whale arching out of the water on this TripAdvisor main page, and their own corporate page under gift voucher. But really to be fair to customers you need to go do Sydney or Qld tours and see humpback whales doing that as a regular daily sight, not Kaikōura. This tour, the Whale Watch Kaikoura is an icon, and ideal for adults or visitors with the sperm whale or NZ marine life on their bucket list and is a full service experience. For younger or families we’d probably stick with the dolphins, more interactive and fewer crowds.

Weather conditions were amazing but the trip was delayed by at least half an hour. We didn't get to see any sperm whales on the 1.5 hours we had on the sea. One humpback whose small tail we could barely see. Not sure why the delay, maybe out looking for a whale so they didn't need to give out refunds. Dolphins came out to play but we were expecting at least 2 hours on the water and to see a sperm whale.

We were booked into the Captain's Cabin so could see everything going on. Food and drink were provided and we sat back and relaxed in comfy chairs until we got out to the viewing area. The crew found a sperm whale on the surface and we had its company for about 5 - 10 minutes before it sounded - they then found another one for same sort of time. Everybody got "That" photo of the tail and all were buzzing. Last time we did the trip there were no whales - so we now have two. On way back in the crew were alerted to a pod of 250 plus dolphins of various types and we watched them for some time. Weather was good and the sea was pretty flat so trip was really great. Stormy weather came up later in the day so afternoon sailing may have been cancelled. But we had a great time, the crew were terrific, the whole thing was very professional but friendly and happy, and we saw whales - fantastic!

My family and I were scheduled to go on an afternoon whale watch excursion. On the morning of the trip, despite calm seas and little wind (as it turned out, all day), the company sent us a text message saying the trip was cancelled due to bad weather. They refunded all of the ticket price, as per their policy when the cancellation is due to “weather” or factors in their control (e.g. boat problems); good on the company for doing this. Later, at the office, they told me politely the cancellation was due to “ocean conditions”. But the offshore, undersea canyon where the whales usually hang out is 800m offshore. In other words, if the weather and sea conditions were rough out there, it would have been noticeable from onshore. The company very likely cancelled our sailing not because of bad weather, but because they couldn’t find whales in their morning excursions, therefore in line with its policy had to refund customers 80% of their ticket price, and didn’t want to have to do the same for afternoon trips. I wish they had just said so, rather than blaming “weather”.
