Overview

Discover some of the highlights of the British Museum with a guide and get a flavor of one of the world’s oldest and finest museums. Because there is so much to see, you could spend a week at the British Museum and still not discover it all. Experience the best of the British Museum’s collections, starting with a view of the breathtaking ceiling. Admire the spectacular glass roof of the Great Court, a work of art. Then, see the world-famous “Rosetta Stone,” the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics. Admire the controversial Parthenon Sculptures, taken from the Parthenon in Athens by Lord Elgin, the former British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Go to the Ancient Egypt galleries to see the large collection of Egyptian mummies, and discover the Anglo-Saxon “Sutton Hoo” burial relics, as well as the “Winged Bulls” from Khorsabad.

We knew going in that there is too much to see at the British Museum and that is why we got a guide to hit the highlights. Our guide Paul was wonderful. He kept the tour moving while still giving us plenty of time to savor the specific exhibits we visited. I was most impressed with the Assyrian lion sculptures and the Cortez turquoise snake. The lion was so big and old but in perfect condition! All the highlights are here, the Rosetta stone, the Easter Island head, the mummies and other amazing Egyption treasures. A tour is the way to go. The only thing I wondered about many of these artifacts known to have been looted from other lands, was why not have some masterful and perfectly accurate reproductions made (we have the technology) and give them back to the rightful owners?

This place was so amazing and I go to this place every weekend. And this Museum was so old. This is the best way to tour this gargantuan museum.

There was no tour. We followed tour instructions for the meet up, and no tour guide met us. Very disappointed.

This is really the best way to tour this gargantuan museum. The tour guide, Paul was not only extremely knowledgeable, he was extraordinarily enthusiastic, and clearly passionate about what he was talking about. It was really great to go into a large room and for him to zero, in on a particular item while watching others wander aimlessly, overwhelmed by so much of what was there to see.
