Overview

The Lázaro Galdiano Museum is the result of José Lázaro Galdiano's legacy to the Spanish State. This museum, one of the few Madrilenian ensembles of mansion and garden that have survived to this day, houses more than 3,000 works of art (selected from its collection of 12,600) exhibited and distributed on four floors of what was the private residence of José Lázaro Galdiano and his wife Paula Florido. The motto "a collection of collections" expresses the eclecticism of the Museum's collections, its excellent pinacoteca, which includes great works by Goya, Zurbarán, Carreño, El Greco, Cranach, Constable or Bosch and is complemented by sculptures, weapons, ceramics , ivories, numismatics, jewelry, textiles, or miniatures among other varied collections.

Visit: Museo Lazaro Galdiano, Calle Serrano 122, 28006 Madrid Spain

The Lázaro Galdiano Museum: a centre for art collection. This is our slogan. It expresses the wealth and eclecticism of the museum, as well as our strategy and the direction in which we want to develop. We aim to be a benchmark and a point of reference in the study and promotion of art collecting, and seek to encourage reflection and dialogue in this fascinating area.

This museum captures the taste, refinement and culture of a 19th/20th century European intellectual. The on-line ticketing and slotted times are convenient and help to avoid crowds.

Another must visit museum when visiting Madrid is this lessor known compact museum that’s very slightly off the beaten-track. It packs so much over 4 floors of a building that of itself is stunning in every respect – the artwork on the ceilings is amazing and could easily be missed. Unlike the main 3 museums in Madrid, this museum is much more peaceful and so makes viewing a very enjoyable experience. Also, the variety of exhibits probably sets this museum apart – check out the ‘Small Portraits’ collection; the ‘Jewellery/Valuables’ collection, etc. I spent about 3 hours here, and know that I’ll happily return in the near future.

We came quite late in the day so had barely 2 hours which is not enough to see all the treasures across 4 floors of the very beautiful mansion. There is so much to see it is a little mind blowing. The building itself is also amazing especially the painted ceilings in many of the rooms.

The museum closes early so check times. Four floors in Galdiano's palatial home. An incredible collection of European art, swords, silver, cameos, and textile fragments from around the world. The rooms with gilding and ceiling frescos of famous artists, writers and allegorical figures are fantastic. We arrived at 2 and were admitted free as they wer closing at 3! Next time in Madrid I will go early and get the audioguide. It is better than The Frick for the range of works...all collected by one man.

This is the museum we were most pleasently surprised by. We were mostly there for the paintings and I have to say, the collection is big and has masterpieces, we had only expected to see in a nacional gallery. There are a lot of realistic, impressionistic and expressjonistic paintings that swept us of our feet. Goya's paintings in the museum are also really impressive! The house itself is also beautiful and definetly worth seeing. They also have probably the cheapest souvenir shop compared to other galleries in Madrid, where you can get really good and big prints of paintings for just 2€. Do not miss out on visiting this one!!!
