Overview

Mammoth Cave self-guided tours allow visitors to explore by themselves, while listening to an informative 'audio tour' available in English, French, German, Malay, or Mandarin. This is the easiest of the caves to tour, with the first chamber accessible by wheelchair. Entering the cave through native bushland along a gently sloping boardwalk, visitors can explore the natural time capsule at their own pace. The cave once contained over 10,000 fossils, many of which were the remains of long-extinct giant animals known as Australian Megafauna. Visitors can even view a 50,000-year-old 'zygomaturus' jawbone embedded in the cave wall. After exploring the cave, visitors can take an optional bushwalk back to the guide's station and enjoy the magnificent marri and karri forest surrounding the cave.

Visit: Mammoth Cave, Caves Rd Just 15 minutes drive south of Margaret River, along Caves Rd., Boranup, Margaret River, Western Australia 6286 Australia

Entering Mammoth Cave through stunning karri forest via a gently sloping boardwalk, you'll realise just how much there is to see here. Over 10,000 fossils had at one time accumulated inside the cave; and upon excavation, many of these were found to be remains of Australian Megafauna (giant animals) that became extinct around 46,000 years ago. There is even a 50,000-year-old 'zygomaturus' jawbone embedded in the cave wall.

Wander at your own pace along the boardwalks and platforms, through the majestic chambers of the cave. As you go, your audio tour provides information on the history, geology and biology of the cave and surrounds. If you visit during winter, you'll see a stream flowing through the cave which flows a remarkable red colour; from natural tannins drawn from the leaf-litter in the surrounding forest.

As you leave the cave, you have the option to complete your tour with a walk along the beautiful 'Marri Trail', with a rich variety of song birds and stunning flora displays. Mammoth Cave is much more than a cave - it is a complete nature experience.

To find the Mammoth Caves in Margaret River was very easy - great signage - and just off the main road. The walk through with the audio tour was very informative but could be challenging to those with any mobility issues.

This was quite an easy cave to examine and one we hadn't seen before. The fossils were stunning and the formations are simply beautiful. The staff were very helpful and engaged in a but of humour with us as well. We took the long walk back as recommended and it was delightful being among such tall timbers

Beautiful cave! The self guided tour was a great feature. The information was presented really well and the above ground walk was also great. Would definitely recommend!

This is a great self guided tour of the cave. With your MP 3 player providing the commentary along the way, you can go at your own pace. This is quite an accessible cave.. The cave itself is quite spectacular and I wound recommend a visit.
