It sounds crazy that you have to leave so early for this trip, but it's certainly worth it! We were the first group to the visitor's center at the summit, and we had the place to ourselves for about 1.5 hrs before the big tour busses came and the place was packed. Be forewarned- it's COLD up there! My phone said 44F, and our group stood in the cold & wind for 2 hrs. We brought sweatshirts & wore layers, but it wasn't enough. Thankfully Skyline provided jackets for everyone. Don't forget to bring hats, gloves, maybe a scarf, and long underwear! Our 2 hr. wait was rewarded with the most beautiful sights! When we pulled up, the stars in the sky were spectacular! It looked like the sky they show you in planetariums. Thousands of stars, galaxy clusters, shooting stars - so awe inspiring and beautiful! The sunrise is amazing! While the actual sun rising is just a few minutes, the 45 minutes or so just before it you can witness the sky turning various colors, and it is just beautiful. And as the sun comes up, a traditional Hawaiian chant is sung, and the whole experience is just magical. Our gude Bill was so knowledgeable. He knew where we should stand/wait for the best view and to be out of the wind. He knew so much about the history of the land, and the biology of the volcano. He really helped make for a richer experience. And bonus- we're from MN and it turns out he grew up there, not far from where we live! He's also a great photographer! Breakfast was included with our tour, and I t was at a lovely restaurant with a market. Food was great, and overall the experience was just awesome. About 20+ yrs ago i went on a Haleakala sunrise bike tour, and this tour far exceed that one - in the quality of the tour guide, the gear provided, and that it also included a lovely breakfast. It was well worth the price paid for an experience our family will always remember.

Probably my favorite activity during our trip. Chose this one for both the previous reviews and the fact that they provided coats - it is COLD (low 30’s) and windy up there. Pack a hat and gloves on your own though. I also asked (pro tip from other reviews) for blankets from our hotel desk before boarding our very early (2:55 am) hotel pickup, very helpful. Another tip was bringing collapsible stools on our trip (thanks, Amazon) … took little room in our luggage, but lifesavers as otherwise would have been standing in the freezing cold for 2.5 hours as no real seats up there. The breakfast venue was great, good and well organized.

Our tour guide Glenn picked us up at 2:45am, yup you read that right 245 am! Had to pick up about 10 other couples at various hotels and then off to the volcano to see the sun rise. Awesome! We were lucky enough to have a calm morning no wind, very cool-okay yes cold but tour provided coats to wear but I suggest to abide by what they recommend and wear layers of clothes. The view was spectacular our guide was witty and knowledgeable. So cool to see the crater the stars the moon, venus, the clouds and the awesome sunrise. So neat to hear the natives greet the day! Even though its an early, early morning it was great! Breakfast was great. Might suggest tour drop us off in reverse because if your first to get on the bus your last to get off which kind of sucks. Other than that way cool!

We arrived up top with 40 minutes to see the beautiful night sky and all the stars. Then from first light to sun up was a beautiful display of color. Our guide educated us on different plants, flowers and birds in the area. We stopped to eat breakfast and had the best Macadamia Nut Pancakes I’ve ever tasted and fresh juice. Highly recommend the breakfast place too!!

Our tour guide, Bill, was fantastic! He was a wealth of knowledge, and I loved his commitment to and emphasis on conservation. The scenery was phenomenal. Upon booking the reservation, the woman on the phone emphasized that it would be cold and to wear layers under the coat they would provide. I thought to myself "I'm from the Midwest. I'll be fine." Well..it really was quite cold! I wound up borrowing a second coat..so with a couple of my own layers and two coats, I was still quite cold and wish I'd packed mittens. It warmed up quickly once the sun finally came over the horizon though. I would have loved to spend some more time up there exploring in the daylight. The breakfast place was also super cool, and I would have loved to stay there longer as well. I guess my only complaint is that the 10-hour excursion could have been longer.
